Get a glimpse of what it’s like to be an Interior Designer and Decorator in the real world! There isn’t actually a “˜typical’ day because projects are unique and handled in different ways, however, there are also noticeable patterns that commonly occur on a daily basis.
We have gathered information from different sources and here is a list of the activities that are usually done per project:
- Design Brief
The brief is basically the written summary of all the requirements and specifications of the project. This must be defined based on the client’s style preference. The information gathered from the face-to-face meeting with the client would also determine the budget and the time it will take to do the project. - Research
Get ideas from existing designs, current trends and suitable materials that can be used for the project. - Collaboration
When you work in a team environment, collaboration is always an important process. Working as a team enables everyone to pitch in their creative ideas to help each other provide the best result to clients. Weekly staff meetings are needed to get updates regarding ongoing projects. - Design mock-up
This is an important step for the client to understand and visualise the outcome of the project. Design mock-ups could be in the form of 2D or 3D graphics or it can also be shown through traditional perspective sketches/drawings or floor plans. - Client Presentation
This is the time when the boards, mock-ups or drawings are shown to the client in order to get some feedback. Once everything is approved and signed off, the project will move to the development stage. - Execution
This is the phase when construction begins and see ideas come to life! Regular site visits should be done in order to liaise with architects, engineers, contractors, manufacturers, suppliers, and clients. Tasks and deliverables are closely monitored to make sure the site is in compliance and the whole project is on track. - Completion
When the final set-up is done, a walk-through is needed to see if there are small issues that may need attention.
Aside from that, there are also a lot of things happening in between especially when designers are handling a number of projects at the same time and each project has various stages that need to be monitored a few times a week. Time is also spent on admin work such as making phone calls, answering emails and organising appointments.
