According to businessdictionary.com burnout means

Feeling of physical and emotional exhaustion, due to stress from working with people under difficult or demanding conditions. Burnout is followed by signs such as chronic fatigue, quickness to anger and suspicion, and susceptibility to colds, headaches, and fevers.

It seems like career burnout is becoming more common these days and the typical advice given to people is to go on a holiday to relax, unwind, clear the head and keep a safe distance from all the stressful responsibilities in the workplace. It’s a good suggestion, however, holidays do not cure chronic burnout. This is only a type of band-aid approach and doesn’t completely eliminate the root of the problem.

Burnouts can occur in any industry - financial, tech, retail, infrastructure, health, the list could go on and on… This is one of the top reasons why people take sick days or just quit their job. Sadly, employees are not the only ones who suffer because of this insidious epidemic. The whole company is affected too. Burnout leads to inefficiency and lower productivity, then eventually leads to a reduction in quality.

If you’ve become aware that you’re on the brink of burnout or perhaps already experiencing burnout, it’s time to do something before it takes its toll on you. Get to know some of the major causes and what you can do to stop it.

  • Limited resources and lack of support are major obstacles that make it more difficult for you to do your job. You constantly feel frustrated and exhausted because you are expected to perform well with fewer resources.
  • Time pressure is also a contributing factor. Extreme time constraints and unreasonable and highly aggressive deadlines can push you over the edge.
  • Trying hard to balance work-life can waste your time, effort and energy. Balance is good but integrating the two is a better option. Click here to read more about work-life integration.
  • Your job doesn’t fit your interests and skills. There seems to be some sort of mismatch between your personality and motivations with your current job situation. You might need a career change. Click here to read more about discovering your true calling.
  • Bullying in the workplace is also one of the most common causes of burnout. Perhaps you are being constantly criticised, discriminated, intimidated or harassed. The more anxious you become, the more you get targeted for abuse and therefore leads to depression and then burnout.

Some useful tips on how to recover from burnout:

  • Start by identifying the root cause of your burnout. There could be multiple causes but you need to address the main cause first and then move on to the next. Keep a journal and write down ways on how to manage your situation to eliminate sources of stress and unhappiness.
  • Focus on your physical and mental health. Eat healthy, drink plenty of water and exercise regularly. Rest well and improve your sleeping habits. Always think positive. Click here if you need a motivation boost. Having a healthy mind and body enhances the quality of your life.
  • Reassess your long-term goals. As we get older, our needs and interests often change and this could trigger a domino effect of other related changes. If you have become aware of your real goals and aspirations and determined that you need to tread a different path, then get yourself ready for a career change. Overcome and Conquer Your Fears and don’t be afraid to try something new.
