Study Smart Series #1

Posted by Australian College on

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could study smarter (not harder), get good grades, and lead a balanced life? That’s why we thought of sharing you the best ways to learn more effectively. Also feel free to comment or message us on our social media channels or email us your study tips and we will feature them on our website and Facebook page.

Get in the zone

Create the ideal study space. This also a good way to get yourself in the mood to study. Also, limit distractions! leave your phone alone and stay off social media. You can also listen to music but we recommend to choose the ones without lyrics. In fact, music can help you memorise better! It can launch your mind into a flowing (optimised) and remembering mode.

Sleep well, exercise & take breaks

You absorb information better when you’re well-rested and well-fed – and even better after you’ve exercised! Consume nutritious foods to get your brain powered up. When it comes to food, choose nuts, berries, and yogurt instead of chips and other junk food! Stay hydrated and take a one minute break every 30 minutes to stretch and move in between your study sessions.

Make a study schedule

Create a time chart of activities and divide them into short chunks. Shorter study sessions help the synapses* in your brain process information much better than lots of information in long sessions. Avoid the last-minute, all-night, self-induced study session because it can impair your memory and concentration.

*A synapse is the tiny gap across which a nerve cell, or neuron, can send an impulse to another neuron. When all your synapses are firing, you're focused and your mind feels electric.

Use flash cards

You might be thinking that flashcards are a thing of the past… No, they’re not! Your brain stores information better when you’ve written something down so this means you’ll probably have to lose the highlighter and start writing the essentials on flash cards. Read more about the Leitner Flash Card System - it’s the implementation of the principle of spaced repetition at increasing intervals.
