To develop a proactive personality, you have to start with taking control of your life. List down your goals and the activities that you need to do in order to achieve them. Create a mind map or a flowchart if you have to. When you plan things, having foresight will help you become aware of potential obstacles and risks that you might face instead of just instinctively reacting to stimuli. Be ever-ready by thinking of a Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, so on and so forth. Consider visualising for alternatives. Accept that problems are part of the equation but also have a positive mindset and strong faith that there’s more than one solution to a problem.


Establish core values and standards as guidelines. Do not settle if something doesn’t feel right or you think it’s just semi-satisfying. Direct your own life instead of being pushed by external influences. A lot of things can go wrong if you let others decide for you. Control the flow, not go with the flow. Invest all your time and effort in making conscious and intelligent choices in life and do your best to follow-through because the most excellent preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today.

When you habitually avoid or intentionally delay starting or finishing a task that needs to be accomplished and let it linger on the to-do list for hours, days, or even weeks due to various reasons, you could be a victim of a mysterious and potentially dangerous force called procrastination. Pouring all your strength in completing a certain task is like trying to bring the same poles of a magnet together and no matter how hard you try, they only repel.

The procrastinator’s favourite words are “later” and “tomorrow”. Amidst of all the urgent assignments, tight deadlines and unfinished projects piling up, they are often being put off in favour of checking social media sites, playing video games, online shopping, binge-watching shows on tv or sometimes even prioritising trivial things. There are so many distractions everywhere that make it even more difficult to focus on what should be done.

This extremely bad habit has a lot of harmful effects on one’s life. Students often get poor grades or fail in school. Employees have unsatisfactory work performance. It’s simply inevitable. On a positive note, since procrastination is considered as a bad habit, there are possible be ways that can be done to get rid of this self-defeating behaviour pattern. For this to work, you have to be absolutely committed to moving forward. However, once you decide to nip it in the bud before it becomes a more serious issue, changes would only happen gradually and not overnight.

Here are common reasons why we procrastinate and some suggestions on how to tackle it:

The Pareto principle (also known as 80/20 rule) can help to overcome laziness. It states that “80% of the outputs come from 20% of the inputs.” Determine the most important task and focus on it. According to burnout means

Feeling of physical and emotional exhaustion, due to stress from working with people under difficult or demanding conditions. Burnout is followed by signs such as chronic fatigue, quickness to anger and suspicion, and susceptibility to colds, headaches, and fevers.

It seems like career burnout is becoming more common these days and the typical advice given to people is to go on a holiday to relax, unwind, clear the head and keep a safe distance from all the stressful responsibilities in the workplace. It’s a good suggestion, however, holidays do not cure chronic burnout. This is only a type of band-aid approach and doesn’t completely eliminate the root of the problem.

Burnouts can occur in any industry - financial, tech, retail, infrastructure, health, the list could go on and on… This is one of the top reasons why people take sick days or just quit their job. Sadly, employees are not the only ones who suffer because of this insidious epidemic. The whole company is affected too. Burnout leads to inefficiency and lower productivity, then eventually leads to a reduction in quality.
