SpeakingSkills-Feb2020.png

Great leaders and renowned influencers seem to be naturally born with a talent in speaking. They are more verbally communicative and have distinguished eloquence. When you hear them talk, they seem to always effortlessly express their thoughts into words in a coherent fashion. They undoubtedly found their strong suit and continuously cultivated it to become even better in what they do.

Speaking is an important soft skill that is very valuable especially in highly social environments specifically the entertainment, hospitality, medical, business, sales, and retail industries. It’s actually a special skill that serves as a cornerstone of establishing and developing relationships. It enables us to grow and perform well both personally and professionally. However, as much as it seems too easy for some people, it’s also extremely difficult for others. But why?

“Words have incredible power. They can make people’s hearts soar, or they can make people’s hearts sore.”

― Dr. Mardy Grothe

Effective communication can be particularly challenging. When we want to get our message across, sometimes we find ourselves uttering the wrong words that we didn’t mean. Others might take offence and take it the wrong way even if it’s completely unintentional. What can we do to avoid this type of embarrassing and awkward situation? One way is to practice by articulating thoughts! Doing this every day will improve your general speech habits and overall way of expressing yourself.

“Before speaking, notice what motivates your words.”

― Surya Das

Journaling-Feb2020.png

Back in the day, journaling was perceived to be more of a “girl thing.” If you’re a Baby Boomer, a Gen X or a Xennial, a daily journal probably reminds you of the phrase “dear diary” written at the start of every journal entry. Now that we’ve entered a brand new decade, Generation Alpha is beginning to ease into the mix, and with the digital age in full swing, journaling has just reached a whole new level. More and more people are now motivated to give journaling a try.

Journaling has evolved over the years. It’s not only about filling in blank pages, but it’s also a form of art! It evokes creativity and improves productivity. The act of writing our thoughts and goals on paper allows our retention-driving triggers to perform. It fires up our brain in a different way. This may sound very old-fashioned but having tangible growth tools actually ignites our desire to succeed in carrying out goals and objectives even more.

“Writing in a journal each day allows you to direct your focus to what you accomplished, what you’re grateful for and what you’re committed to doing better tomorrow. Thus, more deeply enjoy your journey each day.”

― Hal Elrod, Author and Speaker

“A personal journal is an ideal environment in which to become. It is a perfect place for you to think, feel, discover, expand, remember, and dream.”

― Brad Wilcox

So start flexing your Creativity. Exercise your thought muscles. The more you do this, the more inspired you get. Keep writing in your journal until it becomes second nature to you. Aside from that, it’s also considered as a form of therapy. According to Dr. James Pennebaker, the author of Writing to Heal, “When we translate an experience into language we essentially make the experience graspable.” Through writing, you develop a much deeper connection with yourself and a more definite sense of purpose.

“Writing in a journal reminds you of your goals and of your learning in life. It offers a place where you can hold a deliberate, thoughtful conversation with yourself.”

― Robin Sharma

WorkStrengths-Feb2020.gif

“What are your strengths?” This is probably the most popular job interview question of all time. It seems like a very easy question but it’s particularly a hard one to nail.

Have you discovered what your strengths are? Your answer to this depends on how well you know yourself. Look into your innermost core to identify what you value, what you’re good at - what makes you tick. It matters a lot because your strengths are your unique positive traits and have something to do with character. Understanding the dynamics involved enables you to fully maximise your potential and become the best version of yourself.

“Strength and growth come only through continuous effort and struggle.”

― Napoleon Hill

Strengths are naturally manifested through daily life. Like for instance when you learn to do certain tasks quickly and with ease, then that turns into your personal strength. It then becomes a part of your identity and gives you a better grasp of who you are.

“Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.”

― Arnold Schwarzenegger

When it comes to dream-building, individuals perform mental and physical activities in various levels of capacity and making use of strengths actually play an important role in successfully reaching planned end goals. However, it's also important to take note that strength development doesn't follow a time frame. Strengths are often built through experience and it's also possible for strengths to be learned.

“Anyone can give up; it is the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone would expect you to fall apart, now that is true strength.”

― Chris Bradford, Author

Admitting and accepting your weaknesses is a sign of strength. Mistakes and shortcomings give valuable life lessons and failing at something isn’t the end of the world. When you focus too much on what you're lacking, you'll just end up feeling empty and unfulfilled so do not waste time and effort fixing your weaknesses. You will feel more productive and content if you leverage your strengths and use them as growth tools. In the end, you might even discover strategies that can eventually turn weaknesses into strengths.

Your strengths are your assets. When you become aware of all your strengths and constantly focus on them, you may discover a lot about yourself that you didn’t know yet. There’s more of you than meets the eye. You are actually braver than you know and stronger than you believe!

“Sometimes you don’t realize your own strength until you come face to face with your greatest weakness.”

― Susan Gale

KeepGoing-Feb2020.png

Have you ever woken up feeling a little downcast? Strange as it may seem, but you can’t put a finger on it. There are times that we find it hard to perceive meaning in an imperfect world and because of this, it’s hard to move forward… You are not alone! The struggle is real to a lot of people.

“We live in an imperfect world, and imperfect people surround us every day.”

― Joyce Meyer

What is your current situation? Have you experienced or currently experiencing difficulties in life? Do you suffer from a lack of self-esteem? Do you feel like you’re a failure? Are you constantly being criticised and picked on? These things happen and we do not have a choice and control over what comes our way, however, we definitely have control over how we react to certain circumstances.

While it might be challenging to train how to respond to things, it’s absolutely attainable. Start by getting to know yourself more. Explore and discern your core. The more you know what your driving force is, the closer you are in defining what your core values in life are. Today is the right time for you to develop your core beliefs and cling to them with passion!

“Determination gives you the resolve to keep going in spite of the roadblocks that lay before you.”

― Denis Waitley

Visualise to Actualise. It helps to have a vision of what you want to achieve in life for you to be more inspired to take action and chase your dreams.

“If you want to reach a goal, you must 'see the reaching' in your own mind before you actually arrive at your goal.”

― Zig Ziglar

Be headstrong. Motivation doesn’t come easy. Every now and then we feel discouraged. That feeling is normal but it becomes unhealthy if you stay there for too long. Find the courage and the strength despite all the negativity that surrounds you. You are allowed to feel tired and helpless so give yourself some time, but also make sure you take the necessary steps to improve the situation.

When you fail, keep going. When you succeed, keep going! Work hard until your ideas come to fruition. If you tick all your goals, make new goals. The possibilities are endless for those who think and dream big.

“When you reach the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on.”

― Franklin D. Roosevelt

“Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did.”

― Newt Gingrich, Historian and Author

SetLongTermGoals-Jan2020.png

Goal Setting is an important part of success. Most successful people are goal-oriented and usually work on short-term goals that eventually lead towards one final goal. Smaller goals are combined and are typically included within a much larger scope of work. The end results achieved are due to all the careful planning made in order to reach an ultimate long-term goal.

“Remember to dream big, think long-term, underachieve on a daily basis, and take baby steps. That is the key to long-term success.”

― Robert Kiyosaki

What are the benefits of having long-term goals? The ability to visualise and to think long-term increases your commitment level in sticking to your plans despite the challenges you may face. When you feel more engaged and involved in something, the more you look forward to taking the next steps even further. Your interest only continues to develop as your confidence grows. It could also take a while for you to realise the progress you’re making, but one day you’ll just take a step back and notice everything that you’ve achieved. These are all the fruits of your hard work.

“Each day, you can awake and focus on small, easy goals you can accomplish in the short term - goals that, over time, will lead you to your long-term goal.”

― Karen Salmansohn

“Since self-control is vital to reaching long-term goals, befriending people with willpower could be the secret to success. Whether you're tempted to skip that workout at the gym, or you're considering blowing this month's budget, spending time with a disciplined friend could boost your motivation to maintain healthy habits.”

― Amy Morin

b2ap3_thumbnail_10-Benefits-of-Reading.png

Mental Stimulation

When reading, you are keeping it charge, exercised and readily active. It also can help increase your imagination and creativity. It is said that reading enhances mental stimulation, which can prevent or even slow the progress of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Relax

Reading can also be a good way to wind down and slip into a new world of the book you are actively reading. Reading is an escape for some people and it is nice to escape to a different place sometimes. Reading before bed instead of playing on your phone is a good idea as the brain is able to wind down with focused attention. If you are studying, it could be a good idea to read your study noted before bed as you will be able to retain and absorb the information while you are sleeping.

Increases Your Knowledge and Intelligence

When you read a fiction or non-fiction book, your knowledge and intelligence increases. The more you read, the more you know. Your confidence will benefit and with the increased amount of information you know, the confidence you gain will positively affect every aspect of your life.

Vocabulary Expansion

You will have a rich vocabulary growth when it comes to reading. The more you read, the more words you know and the more you will be able to articulate what you want to communicate to others, whether it be writing or speaking. Being able to communicate thoroughly and easily is an admired skill for anyone in any profession, scenario or situation in life. Once you realise that you are able to communicate this effectively, it can boost your self esteem and self confidence which is very important for self growth and development.

Memory Retention, Focus and Concentration

When you read a book, your focus is on one thing, the story. As you read along with the book, you need to remember what happened in the story, the key details and be able to follow it along. Every new memory that you create forges new synapses (brain pathways) and strengthens existing ones, which assists in short term memory recall as well as stabilising moods. Reading gives your brain a good work just like a good run gives your body great circulation.

Stronger Analytical Skills

When reading, watching a movie or even observing a situation, you are able to think fast on your feet as well as being able to resolve, perhaps, a situation faster than you would if you weren’t actively reading. You will be able to analyse things objectively and improve your critical thinking. This is important when trying to problem solve as well.

Better Writing Skills

Again, communication is a big factor and this plays largely in writing skills. You need writing skills in everyday life. Higher vocabulary also equals a wider increased range of words to express yourself in the right context. When reading, you will be able to analyse, observe and view the writing styles of other projects.

An Increase In Empathy and Emotional Intelligence

Reading fiction can help become more empathetic and also increase your emotional intelligence by being aware of what the characters in the book go through and how they deal with their situations. Reading a book can also open your mind to a lot of different worlds and situations that can help make you become more accepting to things in life.

Self Development

You become a well rounded person through learning about different people, places and situations where you are able to look at different perspectives, as well as being more interesting to talk to. Depending on what you read, reading will help you learn how others worked towards their success such as reading inspirational stories.

NYresolution-Feb2019-v3.png

If you think resolutions are so cliche, then perhaps you need to think again! When a year ends and a new one begins, your mind is drawn to preparation and planning. You feel optimistic that it’s going to be a fresh new year full of promises and hope. It certainly is the best time to make changes in various areas of your life.

The tradition of writing down all the things that we want to achieve for the rest of the year usually happens in the first week of January. Now that we're approaching the end of the month, the big question is, are you still upholding your resolutions? We start really strong and determined, however, when February comes, we start to fizzle… but why?

Most people fail to commit to their resolutions due to extreme pressure or lack of motivation and discipline. As the saying goes “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” - The intention to change wavers very quickly due to a form of resistance called inertia.

The law of inertia is Sir Isaac Newton’s first law and it states that "A body at rest will remain at rest, and a body in motion will remain in motion unless it is acted upon by an external force." As humans, we are also influenced by inertia - we continue to tread the same path throughout our lives unless other forces alter our course. Therefore, if we would like to change for the better, then we should find that “greater force” that will positively alter the direction of our life inertia.

Here are some of the things you can do to accelerate your success in 2020:

Tackle one resolution at a time

Don’t beat yourself up! Change requires time. Start slowly and work toward changing one thing at a time. It’s best to make small lifestyle changes every day until it already feels like it’s a natural part of your routine. Read more about Game-changing Habits to Supercharge Your Life.

Trust Yourself

Develop your self-confidence. Believe that you can make excellent decisions and you have the ability to improve no matter what your current circumstances are. Your thoughts will eventually manifest into actions so you have to guard your mind against negative thoughts. Click here to learn how to solve the confidence gap.

Be Flexible and Adaptive

If your plan is not working, review and tweak it if necessary. Always be open to suggestions and embrace new ideas. You need to adjust yourself to meet the needs of your situation or current environment.

“I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”

—  Jimmy Dean

Treat each day as another chance to start over.

“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day-in, and day-out.

—  Robert Collier

Write a Letter to Your Future Self

Grab a pen and paper, reflect and write down your thoughts, seal and open it at a future date. Your letter may contain words of validation, reassurance, and encouragement. Try to picture yourself a year, 2 years or 5 years from now and outline what you want to achieve in that timeframe. This could be a great way to make your dreams happen. Write a note to your future self today and you will be amazed to discover how much you’ve changed (or not) over the years.

LearningSkill-Jan2020.png

Education doesn’t only happen in school. In fact, it’s important for us to always keep learning even when we finish our studies. Therefore, a learning culture is what we need to establish in order to forge a brighter future, regardless of the path we choose to take. It’s the driving force that must constantly be nurtured and strengthened to always pave the way towards growth and development.

Our mind is the basis of everything that’s happening in our life so we have to cultivate it and train it to think differently for every aspect of our life to improve and flourish. Use guiding principles. It’s also good to be extra careful not to be preoccupied with trivial thoughts and opt to structure attention and ideas instead. It will help in becoming more organisation-oriented, less incongruous, and obtain an overall positive disposition.

It’s best to focus time and effort on enriching the mind with knowledge and wisdom. Strive to make learning a big part of your life. Active learning is the way to go! Consider getting involved in more meaningful activities that will allow you to process, retain and review information a lot better than usual. This way, you will become more engaged and easily absorb the things that you need to learn in a shorter span of time.

“We now accept the fact that learning is a lifelong process of keeping abreast of change. And the most pressing task is to teach people how to learn.”

― Peter Drucker

“What I've come to know is that in life, it's not always the questions we ask, but rather our ability to hear the answers that truly enriches our understanding. Never, never stop learning.”

― Lester Holt

When it comes to learning, a person’s journey is unique and can never be compared to others. Also keep in mind that there is always room for mistakes. No matter how thorough and meticulous you are, you won’t be able to completely avoid mistakes. It’s always going to be a part of the equation. Somehow, failure allows you to see things from a different perspective and gain insight into the entire situation. As we get older, we accumulate experiences that we can use them to guide us in facing the future with confidence and enthusiasm.

“The truth is that we can learn to condition our minds, bodies, and emotions to link pain or pleasure to whatever we choose. By changing what we link pain and pleasure to, we will instantly change our behaviors.”

― Tony Robbins

“To make no mistakes is not in the power of man; but from their errors and mistakes the wise and good learn wisdom for the future.”

― Plutarch

“In youth we learn; in age we understand.”

― Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach

MotivateToInitiate.png

No matter how routine-oriented we think daily life is, still each waking day is unique and can never be repeated. One factor that causes the uniqueness of a single day is an individual’s level of motivation. There are dips as well as peaks. But despite how diverse the latitudes are, regardless of how challenging the circumstances are, we must be relentlessly willing to work hard and never let our motivation sink into the deep end.

“People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing - that's why we recommend it daily.”

― Zig Ziglar

Break a sweat. Being motivated and trying to keep the momentum going is never an easy thing to do. Get occupied with activities that are worth doing, and at the same time be discerning by making sure that all your objectives are aligned to your core values. Constantly ask yourself, what's most important to you? Define it. If this is still unclear, make it your mission to find out what it is. When you finally discover it, make sure to always keep it in good shape.

“Wanting something is not enough. You must hunger for it. Your motivation must be absolutely compelling in order to overcome the obstacles that will invariably come your way.”

― Les Brown

Use accountability to motivate to initiate exciting new ventures. Set sail for new horizons. Be an overcomer. Unceasingly seek to enhance performance. Make it an active part of who you are for it's an important element of the process - of your journey to success. Consciously put yourself in places of peace and clarity to become more discerning and make better decisions in life. Doing so will further improve your self-esteem and will accelerate your goals and growth.

“Sometimes when you fail, it allows you the opportunity to grow more motivation and get more intense about your training.”

― Abby Wambach

CompellingVision-Dec2019-v2.png

When we establish an effective vision, we also make plenty of room for innovation and development. All excellent concepts and ideas are started by people with a compelling vision. It’s even much better when you share that vision with like-minded individuals. A shared strong vision among employees and managers is a growth enabler that takes different companies and organisations into higher levels of success in the workplace.

“Create a compelling vision, one that takes people to a new place, and then translate that vision into a reality.”

― Warren Bennis

“All successful people men and women are big dreamers. They imagine what their future could be, ideal in every respect, and then they work every day toward their distant vision, that goal or purpose.”

― Brian Tracy

Limited vision prevents you from doing what you want to do. Perhaps your current situation is what’s hindering you from pursuing something you really want. Another thing that may be holding you back is fear. When you feel like you’re not moving forward, gently remind yourself that you are aiming for progress and not perfection. If you do not have a vision yet, create one! It doesn’t matter whether it’s groundbreaking or simple because you should only care about one thing - to make that vision real.

“Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.”

― Joel A. Barker

Dare to dream and leave no room for doubts and fears. Do your best to meet responsibilities and discard excuses. When you encounter distractions, refocus. When you feel disheartened, use self-motivation techniques to get yourself back on track. Hardship and struggle are always a part of life so we have to develop the mental toughness to be prepared in any given situation. Start positioning yourself for success. Take control of your future today!

“If you have a vision, do something with it.”

― Anthony J. D'Angelo

“It takes someone with a vision of the possibilities to attain new levels of experience. Someone with the courage to live his dreams.”

― Les Brown

ThankYou-Dec2019.png

The two short and simple words ‘thank you’ are frequently used but somehow their true essence is not understood and their real impact on our lives is not fully realised. This act of gratitude is not only encompassed as a practice of etiquette and good manners but actually goes far beyond that. It’s more than a discipline, it’s a lifestyle.

Expressing gratitude doesn't necessarily have to be grandiose. Even small gestures are enough and at times can be more meaningful and make the greatest impact, especially when shown with genuineness and sincerity. Being appreciated, valued and respected is important to everyone so choose to practice gratitude every day and we will certainly improve all our relationships whether professional or personal.

While saying the phrase ‘thank you’ means a lot to the people we say it to, at the same time, it’s also incredibly rewarding. We get to unlock a lot of benefits such as improved health, higher confidence levels, more patience and motivation - overall, a positive mindset. Aside from acknowledging others, we also need to pay attention to ourselves. One way to do this is by means of self-affirmation. Be kind to yourself as much as you are to others. Give yourself a pat on the back for all the hard work and goals you have achieved.

“Make it a habit to tell people thank you. To express your appreciation, sincerely and without the expectation of anything in return. Truly appreciate those around you, and you'll soon find many others around you. Truly appreciate life, and you'll find that you have more of it.”

― Ralph Marston

“Gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions. The more you express gratitude for what you have, the more likely you will have even more to express gratitude for.”

― Zig Ziglar

“Everyone wants to be appreciated, so if you appreciate someone, don't keep it a secret.”

― Mary Kay Ash

“Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation.”

― Brian Tracy

“Choosing to be positive and having a grateful attitude is going to determine how you're going to live your life.”

― Joel Osteen

TrustRespect-Nov2019.png

Build Enduring Trust and Respect

Giving and earning trust is never easy. It’s something that needs to be developed over a period of time. Many people even struggle with trust due to fear, trauma, and other various reasons. So that’s why no matter how difficult it might seem to earn the trust of others, this should always be one of the most important core values that a person must take into account in life.

“Trust is the glue of life. It's the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It's the foundational principle that holds all relationships.”

― Stephen Covey

When we develop a trustworthy character, it will be easier for us to build personal and professional relationships. We inspire confidence because others feel more secure and sure that they can count on us and that we won’t let them down. Proving ourselves to be worthy of trust can be a tough job but when we consistently display the qualities such as honesty, transparency, openness, integrity, and authenticity, then earning trust should be like a breeze.

“The single most important ingredient in the recipe for success is transparency because transparency builds trust.”

― Denise Morrison

“If people like you, they'll listen to you, but if they trust you, they'll do business with you.”

― Zig Ziglar

Trust is always linked to respect

Same as trust, respect is something that needs to be earned, not demanded. It should also be considered as an essential core value. Moreover, it's best to keep in mind that respect begets respect. If you constantly show good manners and acts of kindness to others, they will acknowledge and reciprocate. In order to achieve a healthy relationship dynamic, it always has to be a two-way street.

Once you’ve gained and strengthened trust and respect that you worked hard for, make it enduring. Safeguard yourself from committing careless mistakes. It’s a lot more difficult to redeem reputation and restore trust when broken and at times even impossible to rebuild.

“Men are respectable only as they respect.”

― Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Respect is for those who deserve not for those who demand it.”

― Paulo Coelho

“Moral authority comes from following universal and timeless principles like honesty, integrity, treating people with respect.”

― Stephen Covey

Rejection happens to everyone all the time and no one likes it. A particular event of rejection creates and triggers a lot of emotions that leave us feeling very vulnerable. Some people bounce back quickly after experiencing rejection while others seem to take a lot longer to get over extreme sadness, find peace and recover mentally and emotionally.

“Rejection can disappoint you, depress you and may even stop you in your tracks. Learn not to take rejection so personally. If you're honest with yourself and believe in your work, others will too.”

― Bev Jozwiak

Deal with rejection in a healthy manner

We naturally want to avoid distressing situations at all costs so it's just normal for us to protect ourselves after suffering from rejection. We get so traumatised and we tend to let fear and anxiety consume us. But even though it hurts so bad, it’s really important for us to undergo the stages of grief after being rejected to be able to fully deal with it the healthy way.

“Most fears of rejection rest on the desire for approval from other people. Don't base your self-esteem on their opinions.”

― Harvey Mackay

What are your core beliefs? Studies show that our beliefs contribute to how we react to painful rejection. To establish core belief system, start by doing regular daily reflection because it helps a lot in shifting to a mindset that focuses more on growth and personality development. Also give yourself positive affirmations everyday as a reminder of your self-worth. This will surely give you enough strength to cope in case you would be rejected again in the future.

“It is necessary to put yourself out for rejection, and accept that you will be rejected.”

― Robert Genn

You may hear others say to you “Hang in there! It’s not the end of the world.” Although you would think that it’s easier said than done because they don’t have any idea what you’re going through but never let negative feelings get the best of you. Just take all the advice you can get. Always remember that your feelings are only temporary - may it be anger, sadness and self-pity. Have the courage to move forward, knowing that you have learned valuable lessons from this experience.

“A rejection is nothing more than a necessary step in the pursuit of success.”

― Bo Bennett

“Do not waste yourself in rejection; do not bark against the bad, but chant the beauty of the good.”

― Ralph Waldo Emerson

LastingImpression-Nov2019.png

First impressions matter a lot because how people see you today can affect your future networks. A positive first experience with you could lead to a job offer you've always wanted, a winning pitch for a project you've worked on for months, and the gaining of trust that increases your credibility to anyone you meet in your personal and professional life.

“A good first impression can work wonders.”

― J. K. Rowling

“Go out of your way to make an outstanding first impression.”

― Robert Cheeke

It only takes a few nanoseconds to make a positive impression so it’s important to make it count. Although it could be difficult to change an impression once it has been made, it's still possible for you to correct the way people see you. However, the first impression influences all other impressions that follow. So when you want to be perceived in a certain way, you need to double or even triple your efforts to shake off the initial impression and make other people forget their original perception of you on your first encounter.

“First impressions are often the truest, as we find (not infrequently) to our cost, when we have been wheedled out of them by plausible professions or studied actions. A man’s look is the work of years; it is stamped on his countenance by the events of his whole life, nay, more, by the hand of nature, and it is not to be got rid of easily.”

― William Hazlitt

Strong leaders who usually show a dynamic, confident, strong, and friendly personality are the types of leaders that can effortlessly influence their followers. This is due to the fact that one’s ability to affect others’ lives depend on how they are perceived. People are naturally drawn to them because they present themselves very well, demonstrate inspiration, motivation and encouragement. They can easily earn trust and respect. These positive qualities are like magnets that attract the attention of people and they also eventually develop the inclination to become like them.

“A firm, hearty handshake gives a good first impression, and you'll never be forgiven if you don't live up to it.”

― P. J. O'Rourke

“Life is a first impression. You get one shot at it. Make it everlasting.”

― J.R. Rim

Whenever you see an opportunity for you to showcase your abilities and talents, grab it. When you want to make a very good impression, try to present yourself in a manner that makes you unforgettable while still being authentic at the same time. When you think you’ve failed to make a good impression, don’t worry. Nothing is set in stone so you’ll get another chance and make sure to get it right the second time around.

TakeSomeGoodAdvice-Oct2019.png

Throughout our lives, we might have given and received thousands of advice over the years. Can you recall the best piece of advice that you have received and have given to others? Sometimes we take the advice when we think we can benefit from it, and other times, well, we just simply do the opposite.

“As you get older, you grow and mature, and that should never stop. As soon as you stop growing, you're done living. I'll always be growing, forever learning, forever taking in advice from people I deeply respect.”

― Odell Beckham, Jr.

Seek advice from mentors and choose your mentors wisely. When we were young, our first advisors were our parents or guardians. When we started to attend school, we spend most of our time with our friends and teachers, so our decisions are often influenced by them. However, there should also be a time when we should choose who to approach to ask for good insights and that's where our mentors come in.

“Mentors don't just have to be people who are older or more experienced than you are. Mentors are people who really care about you, know you, and want to offer feedback and advice to help you grow.”

― Jennifer Hyman

The Unsolicited Advice

When others hear about your problems, sometimes they would be compelled to give you advice even if you didn't ask for it. How do you react to unsolicited advice? If you receive suggestions from others, it’s best to keep in mind that they should be taken with a grain of salt. Try to keep an open mind and see the positive side of things. Besides, most of the people who offer support genuinely mean well anyway. This might sound tough, but instead of feeling offended and defensive, it’s a lot better to listen. Politely acknowledge the advice. Showing kindness and appreciation can definitely go a long way.

“Be true to yourself, stay focused and stay you, take advice from other folks, use what you can, but never mind what is not for you. For the most part, trust yourself and believe in what you are doing.”

― Taalib Johnson

The Advice with Criticism

When you get unsolicited advice, some of them may contain criticisms. While the comment might feel like a punch in the face, constructive feedback can also be beneficial. When others point to us our weaknesses, they are actually giving us the opportunity to develop and improve ourselves. Yes, it’s really hard to hear criticism but when we learn to handle them the right way, we could accept and use them to our advantage. Take note of the most important lessons learned.

“It is an easy thing for one whose foot is on the outside of calamity to give advice and to rebuke the sufferer.”

― Aeschylus

Know that in the end, you are the one who have the power to take action. You can reflect upon the suggestions you hear from others. Filter the advice you get. When you feel that they are already crossing the boundaries, don’t be afraid to speak up and say that you appreciate their thoughts but unfortunately, it just doesn't apply to you then move on.

“People are full of great advice... Professors, parents, friends mean well... But in the end, the person driving this thing called life is you. Listen to you. Spend time being alone. Learn your worth. Dream. And never forget where you came from.”

― Brooke Baldwin

In this complicated world, it’s easy for our minds to get tainted by the various sources that surround us. It’s also very common for us to fall into the trap of being influenced and dictated by mainstream society. As a result, we develop inadmissible habits that interrupt our growth and development and give us a hard time to overcome habitual skepticism. For us to reach our goals and succeed at a much greater rate, it’s very critical for us to integrate values to gracefully navigate through life.

What’s in Your Core?

Examine yourself. What are your beliefs? What are your aspirations? Have you discovered your purpose? If your answer is no, then now is the perfect time to explore and discern your core! We are all unique individuals, so each of us would have completely different answers to these questions. Values formation has a strong correlation to success and happiness. So the more you know what your driving force is, the closer you are in defining what core values you need to help get you a step closer towards attaining your goals.

“Our core values and business ethics will always be paramount in all that we do, and we are always looking to do the right thing and settle claims fairly and accurately.”

― Tricia Griffith

How are core values formed?

There are hundreds of values formed based on an individual’s desired self-image. However, it’s important for us to understand that values are not chosen. The very core values are not merely selected from a list of these personal values - they need to be discovered. We all need to go through a certain process of thorough evaluation in order for these values to be revealed to us. When the time comes, we will eventually be well-aware of the values that truly represent our core essence. We need to fully acknowledge and live by them consistently on a daily basis, otherwise, we might feel lost and live an incongruent life.

How do core values help?

Your values help you make sound decisions. Decision-making can be a little tough sometimes, and each decision entails certain consequences. We have the freedom to pursue our goals in life and to exercise control over things that are significant to us, so we need to be more mindful and use this freedom the right way. Also, knowing what key values to priorities will also help in driving your thoughts and decisions and not be sidetracked.

When you apply for a job, you will be assessed in a certain way that enables the employer or hiring manager to look at your personal and professional background in light of the organisation’s principles. This helps them determine if you will be a good fit for the job and the organisation. And when you finally get the job, use your personal values in the workplace, aside from abiding by your organisation’s core values. They can definitely be aligned for the purpose of reaching your peak performance at work!

“With the right people, culture, and values, you can accomplish great things.”

― Tricia Griffith

Get out of your comfort zone and disrupt some patterns if you have to! The journey to discovering and sticking to values requires serious effort. Finding out core values is one thing, and reaffirming them is another. So keep your focus! Have faith in yourself. Allow your core values to guide you. Try your best not to drift away from the goals you’ve set and you will certainly achieve a sense of contentment and fulfillment in life.

“Live your days on the positive side of life, in tune with your most treasured values. And in each moment you'll have much to live for.”

― Ralph Marston

“Just as your car runs more smoothly and requires less energy to go faster and farther when the wheels are in perfect alignment, you perform better when your thoughts, feelings, emotions, goals, and values are in balance.”

― Brian Tracy

“Achievement of your happiness is the only moral purpose of your life, and that happiness, not pain or mindless self-indulgence, is the proof of your moral integrity, since it is the proof and the result of your loyalty to the achievement of your values.”

― Ayn Rand

BounceBack-Oct2019.png

Dealing with setbacks is a part of life, however, no one is ever immune to it. No matter how many times we go through difficulties and eventually overcome them, they can still get to us sometimes. When morale is down and emotions are high after experiencing multiple failures and disappointments, You might find it hard to survive, recover and learn important lessons during the really tough times.

Take note of these tips to help you bounce back from any setback:

Crisis management

A Crisis can be anything such as having negative feelings, disasters via natural causes, health issues, family problems, professional and personal matters, so on and so forth. It could be hard to think straight under extreme circumstances. What do we do to fearlessly conquer any crisis? Devise a plan! There are a lot of proactive steps you can take whenever things get awry. Read the blog post Be Prepared For Anything for more insightful advice.

Find out the cause of the setback

It’s better to find the cause of the setback during the early stages rather than waiting until it has grown and escalated. Look for the early warning signs then nip it in the bud *before things get out of hand.

Don’t be afraid to try again.

You were confident that you were making so much progress but something happened and you seem to have come up against a brick wall. You get angry and frustrated and resort to band-aid solutions. Sure it can get you far, but not enough to get out of the sticky situation. When you’ve reached the point where you realise that there is nothing much you can do about it, consider starting from square one. Make adjustments to your strategy if you have to. The lessons you’ve learned from your previous experience will help you perform much better the next time around.

“Persistence and resilience only come from having been given the chance to work through difficult problems.”

― Gever Tulley

“The keys to patience are acceptance and faith. Accept things as they are, and look realistically at the world around you. Have faith in yourself and in the direction you have chosen.”

― Ralph Marston

“I think that life is difficult. People have challenges. Family members get sick, people get older, you don't always get the job or the promotion that you want. You have conflicts in your life. And really, life is about your resilience and your ability to go through your life and all of the ups and downs with a positive attitude.”

― Jennifer Hyman

“Striving for success is healthy - but believing you need to succeed the first time around may backfire. Mentally strong people believe failure is part of the process toward a long journey to success. By viewing failure as a temporary setback, they're able to bounce back and move forward with ease.”

― Amy Morin

“Every setback means you're one step closer to seeing the dream come to pass.”

― Joel Osteen

If you are on a healthy eating plan based on the current macronutrient portioning of food per day you are probably eating 2,000- 2,200 Kcalories if you are a female and approximately 2,600-2,800 Kcalories if you are a male.

The food pyramid emphasises that our break up of Kcalories should be 50% carbohydrate, 25% fats and 25% protein. As a 78 kilograms male, I should be eating approximately 2,700 Kcalories divided up into approximately 675 kcals of protein and fat and 1,350 Kcalories of carbohydrate per day. Being active, this prescription should keep me weight stable.

Caloric Restricted Weight Loss

If I was looking for weight loss and was prescribed a caloric restricted diet of 1,200 Kcalories, my division of macronutrients would be 600 Kcal of carbohydrate, 300 kcals of fat and protein. The 600 kcals of carbohydrate prescribed is enough to maintain my normal bodily functions at rest but is just barely enough to feed my brain as well if I have previously been on a high carbohydrate diet.

My Liver is pumping hard making any additional required glucose via converting some protein to glucose (gluconeogenesis). The protein conversion is only good for approximately an additional 200 Kcals so all in all I have approximately 800 Kcals of carbohydrate available for my 24 hours cycle. So at this point all is good and I am coping well.

My background in intensity had always been to“go hard or go home”.

My motto used to be “just do it…. and then spew it!"

As I have aged I have reviewed my old philosophy and realised the importance of multiple movement experiences, performed at low to moderate intensity for as much of the day as possible. What if I went back to my old ways and incorporated some high intensity exercise as part of my weight loss intervention in combination with my reduced 1,200 kcals diet?

Off and Running…

I am now on the treadmill running at 10 kilometres per hour. At this pace approximately 60% of my fuel will come from carbohydrates. Within the hour on the treadmill running at 10 kph I have used approximately 300 kcals of carbohydrates. In the 24 hours that incorporated this run I had 600 kcals of carbohydrate available for all the body systems to function at rest as well as an additional 200 Kcals that can be converted from protein to carbohydrates, so in total 800 kcals of carbohydrate.

My brain requires approximately 30% of my available carbohydrates, which translates into approximately 240 Kcals of energy (30% of 800 Kcalories).

If I expend 300 kcals of carbohydrates from my run, 600 kcals for the cells of the body (brain included) to perform their daily functions, I will have exceeded my total concentration of carbohydrates (600 + 200 = 800 Kcalories) for the day by 100 Kcals.

All of a sudden……“Houston we have a problem”.

If I run on the treadmill 3 days per week with a recovery day between each run, my body will adjust by storing more glycogen that can be used on the run days and I will be able to cope with the reduced carbohydrates available.

But what if I decided to run at this pace for 5 to 7 days of the week. After a week of this combination I could begin to feel tired, physically fatigue or as it has been described… “hit the wall”.

“Hitting the wall” is not restricted to just those who run marathons.

People on severe caloric restricted eating plans combined with high intensity exercise can also experience a similar feeling. I am now in the zone of Glycogen depletion. This can only get worse unless I take some time to recover between training sessions or eat more dietary carbohydrate, energy bars or energy drinks to quickly increase my blood sugar levels and thereby increase my Kcalories….. but this would be against the philosophy of our weight loss program.

The most obvious alternatives would be to:

  • Reduce the intensity of the training dose and expend the same number of Kcalories over a longer period of time tapping into my fat stores and preserving the limited carbohydrates stores for other functions.

  • Alternate high intensity days (glycogen dependent days) with much lower intensity days (fat dependent days).

  • Eat more carbohydrates with the intention of exercising at a high intensity every day.

  • Limit high intensity days to three times per week with at least a 24 hours recovery between training sessions and on the other days perform 10,000 steps or additional movement in the home, at work, active transport at an intensity between 2-6 METS (low to moderate).

What about limiting my carbohydrate intake?

A recent alternative recommendation is to limit our carbohydrate intake to 50 grams per day for two weeks, which will teach our body to utilise more of our fat stores. This method would require a rethink of the proportions of our macronutrients.

What if we changed our 1200 kcalories diet to include 30% protein, 20% carbohydrates and 50% of good fat?

The theory behind this would be that after a two weeks period of no intense exercise our body will begin to convert ketones from our fatty acids for energy to within an acceptable limit, which could potentially improve our fat loss. Ketones could potentially now provide approximately 50% of the brain’s fuel taking the pressure of it being fully carbohydrate dependent.

Additionally, the skeletal muscles would be better adapted to metabolise fatty acids sparing the additional glycogen and protein that was previously used a fuel. The accompanying exercise prescription would involve low to moderate intensity activities of daily living, of which walking would be the cornerstone. Remember we have potentially 80,000 Kcals of energy available for fuel from fat compared to 2,000 Kcals of carbohydrate.... so why not try and use it. This theory tips the carbohydrate loading theory of performance on its head! Think about it as it could have merit in everything we do from weight loss, improvements in health and athletic performance.

Arthur C Clarke once said  “I don’t pretend to have all the answers. But the questions are certainly worth thinking about".

ManageExpectations-Oct2019.png

What do expectations mean to you? If you refer to a dictionary, expectation is a noun that means “a strong belief about what might happen in the future or thinking that something should be a certain way”. Expectations are created based on an individual’s perspectives and standards and oftentimes, they are just merely predictions or conjectures derived from incomplete information. In reality, we all see things differently; however, failure to see things from someone else’s perspective has proven to be very problematic and may even cause people to be estranged from others more than ever, especially from the ones that they care about.

If only expectations were properly managed, then it would be a lot easier to navigate through day to day life without the dramas. So what do we do in order to manage or align our expectations towards ourselves and other people? First of all, it's important for us to understand that expectations are not goals.

Do not mistake expectations for goals

Setting goals and implementing them help us improve ourselves over time, however, when they’re already becoming rigid and inflexible, it’s a sign that they are turning into expectations. In order for us to reach our peak performance, we need to focus more on goals and make sure to never ever let them slide over into expectations. There’s a great value in setting goals that are based on principles, and aiming to achieve them by exerting our best effort while being challenged but not pressured and frustrated.

“Building up expectations, creating unrealistic time frames, feeling like our end goal is the end all, be all can all lead to frustration or anxiety. We end up feeling as though we have to power through what we want rather than enjoying the process and just let the results come as it may.”

― Gretchen Bleiler

Constantly perform reality checks

We have our own vision of an ideal world. We dream about stability, equality, justice, and absolute freedom. We want to be in a safe and nurturing environment where we can develop our core skills and gain knowledge to enrich and make our lives more meaningful. But amidst all the wishful thinking, we must also perform check ups constantly to see if our grasp of reality is still healthy and intact or if we already lost touch of what’s real and what’s not. This method will also help us stay focused on more important things, rather than getting caught up in trying to perfect something that’s already good enough.

“When one's expectations are reduced to zero, one really appreciates everything one does have.”

― Stephen Hawking

“There's strong data that, within companies, the No. 1 reason for ethical violations is the pressure to meet expectations, sometimes unrealistic expectations.”

― Stephen Covey

Communication is Key

When there is a lack of communication, a lot of things can go wrong. As much as possible, try to overcome communication barriers. Never make assumptions! Context is definitely important when it comes to communication. So always put context into consideration to prevent the potential pitfalls in professional and personal life and everything else in between.

Intuition may also induce expectations

The human brain is wired in a particular way. Based on the book Thinking Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman, we process information in two different modes. The first mode is intuitive, unconscious, automatic and emotional. The second mode is slow, rational, conscious, reflective, reasoning and deliberate. Let’s look into the intuitive mode. Using our intuition or gut feeling can be advantageous. Albert Einstein even quoted that “The intuitive mind is a sacred gift”, however, your intuitive and judging functions also have the tendency to get out of hand. When this happens, your mind could become clouded by unrealistic expectations. To prevent this from happening, you need to be able to fine-tune your intuition and not be misled by it. This can be done through observation and lessons learned from various life experiences for you to gain the knowledge and wisdom that can help you plow through life with less heartache and disappointment.

“Expectations were like fine pottery. The harder you held them, the more likely they were to crack.”

― Brandon Sanderson

WorryLess-Oct-2019.png

Those who strive for perfection are leaders and high achievers, but when they push themselves too much, they tend to get into extremely toxic situations. Working hard to achieve something is great, however, when the frustration level is sky high and there is already chronic dissatisfaction and unhappiness in life, we need to start reaching for the pause button, clear the mind and self-reflect.

Overthinking, fear of failure and excessive worrying are very common in perfectionists. Negative thoughts and behaviours affect the quality of life. More damage is done when they get stuck in analysis paralysis, therefore, decision-making is stalled and no action is done.

Everyone commits mistakes. Problems and unexpected challenges come. The best way to handle them is not to run away and hide but to tackle them head-on. Instead of worrying about what’s going to happen when you do something, think about things that can actually go wrong when you don’t do anything at all. Or, better yet, get over your fears, and think about what can go right in any given situation. Take control and take action!

“Worry is a thin stream of fear trickling through the mind.

If encouraged, it cuts a channel into which all other thoughts are drained.”

― Arthur Somers Roche

“I never worry about action, but only about inaction.”

― Winston Churchill

“People become attached to their burdens sometimes more than the burdens are attached to them.”

― George Bernard Shaw

“The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one.”

― Elbert Hubbard

“The best possible way to prepare for tomorrow is to concentrate with all your intelligence, all your enthusiasm, on doing today's work superbly today. That is the only possible way you can prepare for the future.”

― Dale Carnegie

PeakPerformance-Sept2019.png

Athletes train every day to improve their skills in order to achieve victory in a particular sports competition. And if they are amateur athletes, they need to work even harder and be more disciplined in their training. Optimised training methods are incorporated in their routine to reach the gold standard. Practice is a very important element for athletes to develop well over time. When this is done consistently on a daily basis, they will surely reap the rewards in the end.

The goal to reach peak performance is not only applicable to professional athletes. Perhaps you have also experienced that you performed to the best of your ability just like athletes do. Try to recall those special moments when you have achieved above and beyond what is expected of you, and that you constantly excel in everything you do. These are the moments that you have to value and pay close attention to because that should serve as your starting point.

Establish the framework that would empower you to always perform at your peak, up to a certain degree that you feel your life routine is already centered on it. It’s definitely the kind of culture that we all need to develop to attain a better quality of personal and work life.

“Don't lower your expectations to meet your performance. Raise your level of performance to meet your expectations. Expect the best of yourself, and then do what is necessary to make it a reality.”

― Ralph Marston

Be more focused and learn how to create your flow.

Flow comes in different stages depending on an individual’s characteristics and skill level. When you find your flow, do your best not to break it so as you continue to improve your skills, you are then also able to take on more difficult challenges in the long run. When you reach higher levels, you do not only enhance your skills, but you become more patient and resilient at the same time.

“What we can control is our performance and our execution, and that's what we're going to focus on.”

― Bill Belichick

Be more open to learning new things.

When you have the motivation and determination to learn, it will be easier for you to absorb new information. You will be more aware and engaged than you have ever been! Aside from learning the proper knowledge and hard skills necessary to reach new levels, it’s also important for us to develop Emotional Intelligence. Like many other things, EQ can be learned as well. Emotions are a very critical aspect of your journey to making better decisions and to be more efficient and effective in any circumstance. The use of emotions is actually the cornerstone of peak performance.

"The More You Know, the More You Can Grow.”

ToxicSituation-Sept2019.png

A lot of people are victims of toxic situations. In fact, we are all surrounded by a lot of negative energies and emotions that drain us until we do not have the willpower left to face them. They paralyse us and undermine our capacity to function well and prevent us from reaching our full potential.

The sad truth is, no one is exempted from dysfunctional environments. We are all eventually bound to experience this at some point. It doesn’t matter what your current status is in life is at the moment, you can still fall into the sinkhole of unfavourable circumstances. But whatever these circumstances are, the great news is that every problem has a solution, even if it’s not exactly the kind of outcome you hoped for.

Toxic emotions and experiences from our past can sabotage us or keep us stuck with the same old thoughts, patterns, and regrets.

― Debbie Ford

If you are in a toxic environment, you will waste away.

― Richie Norton

The worst scenarios can absolutely destroy confidence and self-esteem so if you feel that you’re moving towards a life of utter distress or have been stuck deep into this slippery slope territory and would like to completely walk out of it and start a cleanse, you need to make a firm decision that you are going to follow through and never look back.

What you believe is very powerful. If you have toxic emotions of fear, guilt, and depression, it is because you have wrong thinking, and you have the wrong thinking because of wrong believing.

― Joseph Prince

My encouragement: delete the energy vampires from your life, clean out all complexity, build a team around you that frees you to fly, remove anything toxic, and cherish simplicity.

Because that's where genius lives.

― Robin Sharma

It would be very hard to progress in life if you constantly feel broken. Allow yourself to heal and keep your peace. Also, bear in mind that recovery never happens overnight; it should be an ongoing process. Everyone’s recovery journey is very personal and unique so you need to peel off the layers of yourself to get in touch with your innermost beliefs and convictions.

Once you're in a position where you can choose to not be around toxic environments, just do that as much as you can.

― Frankie Cosmos

Starting today when you begin to see signs that things are becoming toxic, do something about it right away. Life is too short so be happy and live your life to the fullest!

BetterDecisions-Sept2019.png

According to research, we make thousands of conscious decisions each day and they continue to increase on a daily basis as our responsibilities increase. It may sound quite overwhelming when you think about it, but try to observe yourself from the moment you wake up in the morning until you get ready for bed at night and you will realise that you did make a multitude of choices in just one day.

Decision making can be a little tough sometimes, and each decision entails certain consequences. We have the freedom to pursue our goals in life and to exercise control over things that are significant to us, however, we also need to be mindful and do our best to develop the ability to anticipate the many possible outcomes of our actions and most of all, be accountable to what we do and even what we fail to do.

Here are some tips that you can follow to make better decisions carefully and successfully:

Handle Regrets and What Ifs

We are not perfect. When we’ve made the wrong decision that we are not proud of, we feel terrible and wish we could turn back time in order to correct our mistakes. It’s difficult to let go of regrets but there is no use crying over spilled milk. We can’t go back and change the past, but sometimes the wise option is to accept things as they are and move forward as best we could.

When one can accept that all their circumstances and life events are a result of their decision making, that individual immediately gains back their power to create.

― Michael Austin Jacobs

Change Your Perspective, Change Your Life

Weigh Pros and Cons

When it comes to making major life decisions, we need to be more cautious to prevent potentially catastrophic complications in the future. It's best to take our time and think it through. It’s not easy to tackle the decision-making process with confidence, especially when we’re about to explore the unknown but we can always rely on weighing up the pros and cons and sorting through the alternatives.

The Pros and Cons Decision Model is very straightforward - it’s all about listing down all the specific details and reasons behind your choices. Analyse the advantages and disadvantages. Ask yourself, are the risks worth taking? When it comes to completing this exercise, keep in mind that it’s very important to stay true to yourself. With an open mind, trust that you would eventually make the best decision for yourself.

When making a decision of minor importance, I have always found it advantageous to consider all the pros and cons.

― Sigmund Freud

Know when to NOT make a decision

There are certain circumstances when it’s not safe to make decisions, particularly complex ones. Emotions tend to affect the way we think and behave and usually cloud judgement, therefore preventing us from making rational choices. To be more in control, use the HALT method to proactively deal with the urge to act impulsively. You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain.

“Use the H.A.L.T. method.

Never make a decision when you are Hungry, Angry, Lonely, or Tired.

― David DeNotaris

As we make more decisions in life, we become wiser and braver. Our maturity and positive attitude ultimately brings us one step closer to success!

Oftentimes, the most important decisions are the most difficult to make -
for your future, and the future of the generations that come after you,
hinges on the outcome of those decisions.

― J.E.B. Spredemann

ActionIntention-Aug2019.png

You have developed strong motives and intentions, but is that sufficient enough to lead to long-term positive changes?

Each decision we make, every action we take,
is born out of an intention.

― Sharon Salzberg

It’s not always easy to translate intentions into action. A study was made on why people do not always do things they intend to do and this is usually due to the huge gap between intention and behaviour...

“The single largest pool of untapped natural resources in this world is human good intentions that are never translated into actions.”

Cindy Gallop

We consider short-term and long-term goals in life as self-instructions to get the results that we aspire to achieve. Sometimes we write them all down on paper to help us remember. Our level of commitment for one goal is different to another; we put our priorities on the top of the list and work on them first, however, the goals on the bottom of list are often left behind and forgotten forever.

“Our actions are the results of our intentions and our intelligence.”

E. Stanley Jones

What’s a sure way for us to not be sidetracked? Once intentions are formed and plans have been made, we must always grab the opportunity to take action in order to establish our retention-driving triggers to perform. Doing so will make it a lot easier and more likely for us to adopt desired positive behaviours and develop better habits.

Choose your intentions carefully and then practice holding your consciousness to it,
so it becomes the guiding light in your life.

― Roger Delano Hinkins

It is not good enough for things to be planned – they still have to be done; for the intention to become a reality, energy has to be launched
into operation.

― Walt Kelly

InterviewQuestions-Aug2019.png

Preparing well before an interview will definitely help you get a step closer to securing your desired role. One of the things that you might need to get ready for is to know the common job interview questions you are likely to be asked. It’s worth spending time in advance to research sample questions and consider that as a guide that you can use to practice your responses.

Be aware that interview questions are asked for very important reasons and are mutually beneficial to both the job seeker and prospective employer. As a job seeker, you get a chance to highlight your skills, knowledge, abilities, accomplishments, and communicate your thought process and at the same time, the employer will get to know more of you beyond what you have written on your resume.

“There are two elements to nailing a job interview: form and substance. 'Form' describes the outer layer of your character - your manners, your demeanour, your social skills. 'Substance' describes the inner core of your character - your intellect, your empathy, your creativity.”

Neil Blumenthal, Businessman

When you are given the cue that the interview is done, you may also ask questions because doing so actually demonstrates your eagerness in the role you’re applying for.

Get to know the job intimately that you're applying for.

Don't just read the job description - study it and picture yourself performing every task required of you. When you interview, framing your responses so that you reveal your significant knowledge about the job gives you a massive advantage.

― Travis Bradberry, Author

Also read the article: Job interview checklist

Here are some common interview questions and some tips on how to respond:

Tell me about yourself

You can provide a combination of personal and professional information about yourself that is aligned with the role you applied for, in order to show how you might be a strong candidate. As much as possible, try to share new information but make it strong and concise to gain the attention and interest of the interviewer.

Why do you want to work for the company?

Show your sincerity and your commitment to perform once you’re hired. Think more about what you can do for the company rather than what the company can do for you. This idea should help you provide a good answer to this question.

One of the most common mistakes for an entry-level job interview is to take the position: 'What is this job going to do for me?' You should be saying 'Here's what I can do and here's what I want to do to help you.'

― Norah O'Donnell, Journalist

What motivates you?

Think of example scenarios when you know you know you have achieved something important to you and the things you did to overcome the obstacles you faced. Providing some concrete scenarios will show the interviewer how you were motivated to succeed. Another variation of this question is "What are you passionate about?"

The best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.

GoalsHigh-Aug2019.png

Whatever your dreams and aspirations are, believe that you can pursue them! Do not wait for the right time because RIGHT NOW is the perfect time to take action.

“Successful people maintain a positive focus in life no matter what is going on around them. They stay focused on their past successes rather than their past failures, and on the next action steps they need to take to get them closer to the fulfillment of their goals rather than all the other distractions that life presents to them.”

“By taking the time to stop and appreciate who you are and what you've achieved - and perhaps learned through a few mistakes, stumbles and losses - you actually can enhance everything about you. Self-acknowledgment and appreciation are what give you the insights and awareness to move forward toward higher goals and accomplishments.”

Jack Canfield

When you set higher goals, you will:

Develop the courage to break out of your comfort zone.

When you build your self-confidence and self-esteem, you will not be afraid to make big plans in life. You will also be more willing to face challenges and take calculated risks in order to reach your goals without compromising the quality of your work and also making sure you are accountable for your actions.

“Positive thinking is a valuable tool that can help you overcome obstacles, deal with pain, and reach new goals.”

Amy Morin

Always strive to enhance your performance
so you give 110% effort in everything you do while maintaining your focus and efforts in the right direction. Higher goals motivate You to always do your best and people around you get inspired to do the same. You become more creative, develop problem-solving techniques and are more inspired to improvise and innovate

You are in the time of your life for studying and preparing. Learn all you can. Growth comes from setting your goals high and reaching for the stars.

― Spencer W. Kimball

Become more driven to create new benchmarks

Benchmarking is a tool that organisations use in order to measure the performance of their products and services to other organisations in the same industry. While this process is frequently used in a variety of professional settings, this can be applied in our daily personal lives as well. We might not notice it but there are times that we compare ourselves to others. This is simply a way for us to evaluate ourselves and see how we are tracking compared to our peers. It’s common practice, after all, competition exists everywhere we go! It’s certainly intrinsic human nature to desire to perform better and become the top person in our field of work.

“Set your goals high, and don't stop till you get there.”

Bo Jackson, Athlete

“Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.”

Jim Rohn

WinnerWithin-Aug2019.png

Go the extra mile

When you try to give 110% effort in everything you do, you can definitely go further, and perhaps even go beyond the previous benchmarks that you have set. Always deliver more than expected. Constantly push the boundaries. There are no limits to what you can accomplish!

“If you're going to be a winner in life, you have to constantly go beyond your best.”

― Robert Kiyosaki,

Businessman and Author of Rich Dad Poor Dad

Uncover your potential using self-affirmation

When you work towards your goals, sometimes self-doubt and the fear of failure can get in the way and you feel discouraged as a result of the prolonged negative thinking. Escape this pattern and start using self-affirmations to gain the confidence you need to succeed. There are already so much negativity around us so we need to balance everything out and use affirmations as our mental vitamins to improve our mindset.

“Regardless of how you feel inside, always try to look like a winner. Even if you are behind, a sustained look of control and confidence can give you a mental edge that results in victory.”

― Diane Arbus, Photographer

Practice is everything

The more you do something, the better you get at doing it. Practicing effectively is the only way to excel so if you want to develop important skills, you need to have the patience to practice.

“Winners embrace hard work.”

“No matter what happens on the field,

getting an education makes you a winner.”

Lou Holtz,

Former Football Player, Coach, and Analyst

When at first you don’t succeed, don’t give up easily! Quitting will not solve anything. You may not be able to beat the odds on your first try but you need to let your challenges shape you, don’t let them bring you down. They are building blocks of life that gives you the opportunity to grow and flourish.

The mind is powerful. When you establish and continue to develop the right belief system, you will find yourself winning victory after victory while overcoming your weaknesses at the same time. Learn how to face and conquer your fears. Don’t tread lightly. Always keep the momentum up!

The road that leads to success may be long and winding, but it doesn’t really matter how you travel; as long as you have the right mindset, your personal journey will be a more meaningful and enjoyable experience.

The winner's edge is not in a gifted birth, a high IQ, or in talent. The winner's edge is all in the attitude, not aptitude. Attitude is the criterion for success.

Prepared-July2019.png

The future is uncertain. You can never predict what will happen and you can never totally avoid unpleasant circumstances but it’s best practice to always be ready for whatever comes your way. Preparation can save you a lot of time and headache and you will feel confident that you can rise above all the possible struggles and trials that you will face.

You have to rely on your preparation. You got to really be passionate and try to prepare more than anyone else, and put yourself in a position to succeed, and when the moment comes you got to enjoy, relax, breathe and rely on your preparation so that you can perform and not be anxious or filled with doubt.

Steve Nash

Lord Baden-Powell, a soldier, educator, and prolific writer established the modern Scouting movement which is a service-minded and values-based program that prepares young people for life. We don’t have to become scouts to be ready for anything, but we can apply the same philosophy in life - Let’s properly equip ourselves to react quickly to an emergency and whatever challenges await us.

“Be Prepared... the meaning of the motto is that a scout must prepare himself by previous thinking out and practicing how to act on any accident or emergency so that he is never taken by surprise.”

Robert Baden-Powell

There are so many ways to prepare for anything that’s likely to come in daily life such as economic downturns, layoffs or terminations, financial hardships, relationship problems, sickness, natural disasters, power outages, medical emergencies, accidents or loss of a loved one. While no one can be completely prepared for these things, we can still start to get our affairs in order. We can start thinking about Plan A to Z, and learn how to manage risks as best we could.

No matter how much we plan or prepare for something, we may encounter many things that we cannot control. When this happens, sometimes it’s best to just face the fact and accept that there is nothing we can do about it, so we have to move on and think of different ways to approach the situation. We can even try to improvise and innovate.

“Prevention is better than cure.”

Desiderius Erasmus

Planning and preparation are absolutely essential but it’s also something that’s usually neglected.   We don’t know when disaster will strike. It takes a lot of self-discipline to prepare for contingency but it definitely pays off!

We shouldn't just live for today; we should prepare for tomorrow.

HealthyCompetition-July-2019.png

Competition exists at home, in the local community, in school, in the workplace, in sports - it’s everywhere we go! It’s certainly intrinsic human nature to desire to perform well, to excel, to make something out of themselves, to gain an upper hand and achieve the extraordinary. This is actually a good thing because without competition, life would be stagnant and there will be no progress.

In the long run, competition makes us better...
It drives innovation.

Dennis Muilenburg

The right kind of competitiveness is an important soft skill that one has to learn in order to stay ahead in any industry in the modern world. Healthy and constructive competition is great for holistic personal development. It motivates people to accomplish more, push beyond their limits, be inspired to
improvise and innovate and constantly improve the quality of their work.

If you're a true warrior, competition doesn't scare you.

It makes you better.

Andrew Whitworth, Athlete

While competition has a lot of benefits, it may also come with disadvantages when it’s done the wrong way. Focusing on high performance is valuable but when taken to extremes, it somehow tends to drive over-competitiveness that creates a tense atmosphere and disrupts culture development. There’s a fine line between healthy and toxic competition and when that line is crossed, it could lead to tremendous negative impact at various levels.

“You can’t look at the competition and say you’re going to do it better. You have to look at the competition and say you’re going to do it differently.”

― Steve Jobs

When some people lose a game and are unhappy, angry or upset with the result, they tend to walk away or become aggressive. It can be hard to accept defeat but achieving victory is not the only thing that matters.
There are some competition rules and etiquette that should be followed for everyone to have the best possible experience. We should show respect to our opponent. A simple gesture such as a smile, a pat on the back or a handshake will speak volumes about our character. Good sportsmanship should always be practiced.

Competitions should be fair, friendly and fun. It should not be all about winning, it’s the taking part that counts. It doesn't really matter if you win or lose, what matters most is how you play the game!

A successful competition for me is always going out there and putting 100 percent into whatever I'm doing. It's not always winning. People, I think, mistake that it's just winning. Sometimes it could be, but for me, it's hitting the best sets I can, gaining confidence,

and having a good time and having fun.

― Simone Biles, Athlete

The ultimate victory in competition is derived from the inner satisfaction of knowing that you have done your best and that you have gotten the most out of what you had to give.

Howard Cosell, Sports Journalist and Author

TheBest-July2019-v2.png

No matter how many times you hear this phrase, it never gets old!

It may sound very simple but it’s actually a very powerful affirmation that can improve our mindset for any given situation. Our beliefs become our thoughts, and if we constantly think positive thoughts, it becomes more real and can eventually manifest into positive action.

Focus on hope and have the confidence that you can overcome any obstacle in your path. Always do your best and have faith that good things will come your way. Do not dwell in the past but learn from it and look ahead into the future.

Here are some words of wisdom that can help you leave the bad vibes behind and develop a more optimistic outlook in life.

“When it rains, look for rainbows. When it's dark, look for stars.”

Oscar Wilde

“When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.”

“Everything gets better in the end. If it's not better, it's not quite the end.”

Paulo Coelho

“When life brings you to your knees and shakes you to your core can be a time of profound growth where you develop strength you didn't think you had.”

Debbie Hampton

“Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow.”

Helen Keller

“In order to carry a positive action we must develop here a positive vision.”

Dalai Lama

“Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations. Always remember that your present situation is not your final destination. The best is yet to come.”

Zig Ziglar

“What a wonderful thought it is that some of the best days of our lives haven’t even happened yet.

Everyone’s ultimate dream is to find a job that relates to their passion and make this passion translate into their skillset. It has always been a hot topic especially among new graduates who are trying to get a foot in the door, but is it really possible for passion and career to align?

To establish your journey to career success, you need to have the right amount of passion and then let it develop as you go along. Envision the kind of life that you want to achieve. If you don’t know what it is yet, try your best to discern it. Sometimes the answer is not always obvious but when you dig deeper, you will uncover it one day. Click here to read more about discovering your true calling.

Passion is what gives meaning to our lives. It's what allows us to achieve success beyond our wildest imagination.

Try to find a career path that you have a passion for.

Henry Samueli

Research shows that about 6 out of 10 employees are disengaged and disgruntled in the workplace, thus affecting their productivity and quality of work. One of the main reasons why this is happening is because they are not able to do what they’ve always wanted to do in life, thus, they feel bored, dread Mondays, and get the feeling that they’re “stuck in a rut”.

We have to start closing the gap between passion and work! The workplace is where we spend the most time on a daily basis so it has to be a conducive environment where we can enjoy doing what we do best. We need to develop not only a mindset focused on growth, but also on values formation. These values will then shape our mind, improve our behaviour and serve as an excellent guide in the way our thoughts, words, and actions are formed.

The path to achieving the ideal career is never simple and was never meant to be simple. But the best part is that whatever path you choose, the effort and hard work that you put into building a career will all be worth it because the hard-earned fruits of your labour will outweigh the difficulties and challenges you experience.

Follow your passion, be prepared to work hard and sacrifice, and, above all, don't let anyone limit your dreams.

Donovan Bailey

If you still haven’t realised what you’re cut out to do, perhaps you need to begin creating ideas wherever you’re planted and run with whatever tools you have at the moment. You don’t have to go anywhere; you can start where you are right now! It’s about time to align your work and passion. Financial security is important but you will feel a million times better if you get to do what makes you happy every day. Steve Jobs once said “Being the richest man in the cemetery doesn’t matter to me… Going to bed at night saying we’ve done something wonderful… that’s what matters to me.”

It’s okay to ask for help

If you’re stuck - ask for help! Try to talk with friends or family and they might be able to help you see the problem in a different way. According to the 2016 Wall Street Journal piece by Saint Louis University researchers, they looked at 414 college students, Those who asked their instructors for help during office hours were more likely to perform better. They call it "activist approach" - if they ever didn't understand something, they would ask teachers or classmates, or seek out other resources for guidance.

Set up your study corner

It’s important to create a suitable ‘study environment’. It must be comfortable, otherwise, it would be a lot harder to get your work done. You can set it up anywhere, but make sure there are fewer distractions.

Be active while studying

Let’s face it… reading whole chapters from a textbook can be pretty boring! Being active while studying means you recall, summarise, sketch and visualise.

Dream Big. Set Goals. Take Action!

Everyone is individual and Individuality is the sum of characteristics and qualities that make a person stand out from the rest; something that makes one unique.

"What is unique about humans is their individuality."

Leroy Hood

A lot of well-known successful people have found their niche because they were not afraid to be different from the rest. They embrace change and they continuously work hard to improve themselves to pursue their own endeavours. They are leaders, problem-solvers and influencers. They are not are not afraid to step up and accept accountability and responsibility. You can also follow their example by building your self-esteem and by fostering individuality.

"All greatness of character is dependent on individuality. The man who has no other existence than that which he partakes in common with all around him, will never have any other than an existence of mediocrity."

James Fenimore Cooper

Novelist, Historian

Celebrate your difference! Become a good individual to contribute something good to the society.

Try to escape the sea of sameness, don’t be easily influenced by others and don’t change who you are in order to fit in. When you develop a strong sense of individuality, you will not be easily swayed by the opinions of others. Fight your fears that may cause uncertainty and doubts. Developing your individuality will give you the courage to chase your dreams and to also have the ability to improvise and innovate so you can reach greater heights.

"Individuality is only possible if it unfolds from wholeness."

David Bohm

Individuality is exactly what society needs these days. When you exercise your freedom to express yourself and when you do what you do best, happiness ensues. Never stop tapping your abilities and talents. Have the boldness to share your unique perspective and let it resonate with others around you. Be comfortable in your own skin and believe in your sense of individuality!

"What is genius but the power of expressing a new individuality?"

Elizabeth Barrett Browning

It seems like pure acts of altruism are rarely seen these days, as it’s very often perceived that when a person does something for you, eventually you will be expected to return the favour at some point in the future. But before we totally lose faith in humanity, we have to start believing that there is still a possibility for us to be truly immersed into the realm of selflessness.

We can make a difference right now where we stand. Having a strong will and desire is very important and have faith in your plans too. It doesn’t have to be so complicated. You can actually create or look for opportunities to show random acts of kindness and the best place to start is within your community.

"I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live."

George Bernard Shaw

Build and nourish a strong culture.

Culture is the cement that binds our community. Without it, there will be no value creation, no beliefs, and no identity. We must help find the key to unlock the power of culture.

Promote mutual understanding and respect.

This is one way to develop a strong sense of solidarity. Building a culture is one thing, maintaining real, sincere relationships that foster understanding and respect is another. It’s important for us to accept other people’s opinions, beliefs, values and perspective.

Initiate a cycle that keeps on giving.

Support a cause or think of starting a project that community members can benefit from. You can get involved with a community garden and help grow fresh organic produce. Put up bulletin boards and distribute newsletters that include useful information or recipes!

"The need for connection and community is primal,

as fundamental as the need for air, water, and food."

Dean Ornish

Doing this will enable us to connect to the world on a much deeper level. Instead of asking what you can benefit from something or someone, start thinking of how you can contribute and help out to make a difference in a big or small way. Whatever you do counts!

“One is not born into the world to do everything

but to do something.”

Henry David Thoreau

Whatever stage you are in life at the moment, it’s always best to keep in mind that what you do today will eventually shape your future. Create solid plans to ensure your viability and career sustainability. Focus on exponential growth while being realistic at the same time. The future is never certain but be excited about the possibilities!

Start by asking these questions:

  • What are my dreams, interests and goals?
  • What do I ultimately want to achieve in life?
  • What are my priorities?
  • How do I start?

Be inspired and learn from the wise words of those who have experience:

“You control your future, your destiny. What you think about comes about. By recording your dreams and goals on paper, you set in motion the process of becoming the person you most want to be. Put your future in good hands - your own.”

― Mark Victor Hansen

Life is divided into three terms - that which was, which is,
and which will be. Let us learn from the past to profit by
the present, and from the present, to live better in the future.

William Wordsworth, Poet

“Do not let the memories of your past limit the potential of your future. There are no limits to what you can achieve on your journey through life, except in your mind.”

― Roy T. Bennett

“Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.”

― Malcolm X

“We cannot predict the future. But we can create it.
I desire no future that will break the ties of the past.”

― George Eliot

Happy is the person who knows what to remember of the past, what to enjoy in the present, and what to plan for in the future.

Arnold H. Glasow

The ability to remember the past helps us plan the future.

Your resume is one of the most important parts of a job application. Whether you are looking for your first job or planning to make a career change, you need to learn how to write a resume that will help you get noticed and boost your chances of landing interviews.

Emphasize your strengths on your resume, in your cover letters, and in your interviews. It may sound obvious, but you'd be surprised how many people simply list everything they've ever done. Convey your passion and link your strengths to measurable results. Employers and interviewers love concrete data."

Marcus Buckingham

Author, Motivational Speaker, and Business Consultant

Here are some easy-to-follow steps on how to get the resume format and layout right and what content to include:

  •  Start by choosing a resume type:

    • Chronological format - this is the simplest type that’s why it’s the most widely used resume format. Your professional work experience comes first before your skills and educational background.

    • Functional format - this is also known as a skills-based resume format. You get to showcase your skills that you believe are most relevant to the role that you are applying for.

    • Combination format - this format features both skills and qualifications then professional work experience comes next.

    • Targeted format - you also get the option to highlight the role that you are interested in and the reason(s) why you are a good fit.

  •  A good resume layout should have

    • Maximum of 3 pages

    • Section headings that divide each part of the resume

    • Plenty of white space so that it would be easy to read and the hiring manager or employer can have some space to write on.

    • The right font and size

  • Proofread your resume! Read it a few times before sending your application. This can save you from potentially embarrassing mistakes in the future.

Are you working and also considering study?

If you enrol in a course before 30th June, and the course is sufficiently related to your employment, you may be able to claim the course and certain related costs as a self-education expense.

With tax time just around the corner, and with 20% off* all course fees, right now is a great time to tackle your goals and enrol in a Nationally Recognised or Personal Development course.

What may be claimable?

computer consumables and equipment repairs

purchase of equipment or technical instruments costing less than $300

home office running costs

fares

stationery

textbooks

course fees

accommodation and meals (if away from home overnight)

interest

phone calls

student union fees

trade, professional, or academic journals

decline in value for depreciating assets (cost exceeds $300)

parking fees (only for work-related claims)

internet usage (excluding connection fees)

postage

student services and amenities fees

travel to-and-from place of education

How much can you save?

How much you will save depends on your taxation rate and the course cost.

Here’s a guide:

  • Our Certificate IV Accounting & Bookkeeping course is pay-in-full $2320.00

  • After 20% off promotion, this is reduced to $1856.00

  • If you are taxed at an average rate of 32.5% your course is further reduced to $1252.80

That’s a total saving of $1067.20

To get ahead of your competition in the employment stakes, you need to demonstrate that you are prepared to continue your education, as often as possible. An education course is a great way of ensuring you keep up to speed with industry developments relating to your field, and with the added bonus of making you look motivated to any potential employers.

To help encourage employers and employees alike to undertake educational programs, there are a number of self-education tax deductions available, which include courses undertaken at educational institutions (whether leading to a formal qualification or not), attendance at work-related seminars or industry-specific conferences.

The expenses for self-education can be deducted provided there is a direct and provable link between the course undertaken, and how you derive your income.

You will need to satisfy any of the following tests to be entitled to a tax deduction:

The expense has a relevant connection to your current income earning activities (i.e. the course must be relevant or incidental to how you derive your assessable income).

The self-education program being undertaken enables you to maintain or improve the skills or knowledge necessary to carry out your income earning activities.

The self-education leads to or is likely to lead to, an increase in your income from your current income-earning activities in the future.

Are you eligible for this reduction?

  • You must be a student at Australian College and paying in full for your course fees to fully claim this financial year
  • You must be employed at the time of enrolment, and the course must be sufficiently related to this employment
  • The course must be 12 months or less to fully claim this financial year

* You may have to reduce the claim by $250

June 30th is approaching quickly, so enrol now, keep a copy of your receipt and save significantly! For more information on claiming self-education expenses visit the Australian Taxation Office website here.

Please note: The information in this blog is general advice only and is not intended to be financial or legal advice. You should obtain your own independent advice in relation to tax deductions that may be available to you.

As cliché as it might sound, but life is certainly a series of ups and downs. There are days that are smooth sailing but sometimes we also have to deal with several demanding challenges that have different levels of difficulty. This, my friend, is where improvisation and innovation come in…

It comes down to the difference between what you were planning to do and what life throws at you and you have to end up doing. The one who knows how to improvise is the one who comes out ahead.

Jason Isbell

The difficult situation lets us use our creativity and imagination and allows us to develop agile skills to adapt and thrive in rapidly changing and stressful environments. In order to improvise effectively, flexibility is needed to change things up on the fly. It’s not always easy and how we embrace and respond to setbacks are entirely up to us. Getting it right is just another part of the process, and unfortunately, it’s not always the end result. What do we do when we don’t succeed?

More of me comes out when I improvise."

Edward Hopper

To try and bounce back after a failure and to continue to strive to make things better, is a natural human instinct; however, the hardest part is when we know we’ve done everything we could and yet things are still not working out the way we want them to. When this happens, perhaps it’s much better to accept defeat and take a step back and see the bigger picture. Doing this gives us a chance to clear our mind and lets us develop new strategies and approaches that are more effective than the previous steps we took. This is exactly when innovation takes place.

Innovation has many dimensions, and it never stops. Its pace is also incredibly fast. When one innovation occurs, it can immediately be replaced by something else that’s a million times better than the last one. If your goal is to achieve long-term success, then you have to learn how to use innovation as a tool for development and growth.

Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your other innovations."

Steve Jobs

So what’s your competitive advantage? This is one of the questions that we often encounter in an interview. What can you do to set yourself apart from other qualified candidates? Do you highlight the special attributes that make you a cut above the rest? Job-hunting is getting harder for everyone these days, thus, the unemployment rate is also getting higher so you really have to get creative when applying for a job in order to impress the hiring manager or employer.

How can we achieve a competitive advantage and thrive in today’s highly dynamic world of careers?

The greatest competitive advantage in the modern economy is a positive and engaged brain."

― Shawn Achor

Ikujiro Nonaka, a Japanese organisational theorist, and business expert agrees that continuous learning and creation of new knowledge is the secret to success. His in-depth background in theoretical management studies allowed him to write about pragmatic frameworks that help solve problems in a balanced way while being innovative, ethical and realistic; and all these elements are usually very difficult to put together.

To be able to achieve a balance between developing a realistic competitive advantage and at the same time, making your career sustainable is going to be your most challenging task. Read more about how to create and manage a sustainable career.

“In an economy where the only certainty is uncertainty, the one sure source of lasting competitive advantage is knowledge.”

Ikujiro Nonaka

Indeed, the emphasis has been directed toward knowledge and consistent engagement as the starting point in forging competitive advantage. However, these essential philosophies do not matter at all if not put into action or carried out properly.

“There's no competitive advantage to knowing more than the person next to you. The world doesn't care what you know. What the world cares about is what you can do with what you know.”

― Tony Wagner

Here are some tips that you can try in order for you to gain an edge in the job market:

Make your resume stand out!

It’s all about branding - not only products and services can have branding, you can have a personal brand too! Like for instance, Stan Lee is not the only writer who creates great comic books, but because he’s one-of-a-kind, it made him stand out from all the rest. He started out small but when he decided to look into writing professionally, he eventually dominated the comics industry. It’s not an easy process but try your best to harness the power of your brand and do something that can make it better every day.

Use a combination of skills and experiences

Aside from skills, your experiences can also provide you the greatest value so use that to your advantage. Keep in mind that employment is a two-way street. You don’t work just because you need the money to support your needs and lifestyle, but do your job well because you are passionate and you want to help your company grow.

Highlight your achievements

Identifying your achievements is one of the things that you can do to show that you are the right person for the job. But take note that this is not just about your professional accomplishments; you can also mention the things you have done that helped you succeed in many different areas of life to make your resume more interesting. This also lets the hiring manager or employer get to know you on a personal level and truly see if you are a good fit for the company.

What's the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word education? Do you think about books, teachers, exams or being inside a classroom with other students? These things are all related to education, however, it actually goes a lot deeper than we realise.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

 – Nelson Mandela

Aside from basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter, education has also become a necessity in life. From the moment you reach a certain age, it’s important for you to start your journey to getting an education.

You might recall when you were younger, adults around you would say “Education is a treasure that can never be taken away from anyone.” This statement is crystal clear, it means we have to prioritise and give value to education. Consider it as more than just reading books, memorising words, and having good grades - it’s also gathering practical knowledge and wisdom that you can certainly benefit from in your daily life.

“Education makes you less dependent upon others and opens doors to better jobs and career possibilities.

Solomon Ortiz

Why do we need education?

  • Encourages us to think deeper and makes us more innovative
  • Gives us the confidence to handle different types of situations and become effective at problem-solving
  • Helps us become leaders and to create leaders that make an impact by means of living a values-driven life
  • Enables us to close gaps, to eliminate inequality
  • Allows us to practice our passion
  • Improves our standard of living and quality of life
  • Lets us pursue our preferred career
  • Helps us create a sustainable planet
  • Promotes economic progress
  • Education is the foundation of peace

“Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.

Kofi Annan

There are probably a million things that you can do to build strong team rapport. Whenever you participate in and complete a team building activity, you will have a better understanding of your teammates’ interests, strengths, and weaknesses and learn the importance of teamwork. Aside from that, a great level of trust and accountability will be developed within your team that’s why it’s an integral part of establishing a more positive and conducive working environment.

“Individual commitment to a group effort

- that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.”

Vince Lombardi

“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.”

Henry Ford

“Unity is strength... When there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.”

Mattie Stepanek

Here are some team building ideas that can work as ice-breakers and help create a culture of teamwork in the workplace:

Charades
This is a simple and fun game suitable for all ages and encourages engagement and fosters healthy competition.

Team size:
4 players or more. 2 teams.

How to play: Choose interesting topics such as songs, movies, celebrities or long phrases to put on pieces of paper. Fold the paper in half and put in a container. A player from each team will draw a piece of paper and act out the words and let the other member of the team guess what’s being portrayed. The team who gets the most answers right wins.

Heads Up! (What’s my name?)
This is also another type of guessing game and the questions should only be answered by “Yes” or “No”.

Team size:
4 players or more.

How to play: Write a word or words on a sticky note and stick it to the player’s forehead. The player then asks the group yes or no questions in the attempt to figure out what’s written on the sticky note. Set a time limit to keep each round short and succinct.

Various Board Games
Nothing beats traditional board games! You can now enjoy the ones that were based on television shows such as Family Feud, Deal or No Deal, The Amazing Race, The Price is Right, Trivial Pursuit, Pandemic or Battleship.

These types of games are not for everyone, so ask your team what they have in mind and be open to ideas. You can even try and organise physical activities such as sports games, wall climbing, hiking or fitness boot camp classes!

Are you ready for your next trip?

There are a lot of awesome activities to do and great places to go, but without careful planning, things might go out of hand and you may encounter common travel problems along the way such as overspending, missing flights, delayed or lost luggage, excess baggage, food poisoning, and many others.

Eliminate the stress and hassle by planning ahead of time and to fully enjoy your trip. Planning takes a lot of time and could also be a bit overwhelming but once you’ve done it, you’ll be thanking yourself later.

You can start organising months in advance by creating a rough itinerary with the use of tools such as journals and mobile apps where you can list down places you want to go, the activities you want to do and the food you want to eat. Know what’s the weather like and try to get an idea of the currency conversion rates and basic living costs so you can adjust your budget accordingly. This will be beneficial when you’re going to stay in one place for a long time.

When things don’t go exactly the way you might have hoped, you can also be flexible and spontaneous. Who knows, you might encounter some exciting adventures along the way!

Below is a simple checklist that you can use to prepare for your trip:

  • Put all your travel documents together.
  • Choose good quality luggage that is versatile and easy to carry.
  • A basic first aid kit will certainly come in handy. Include ointments, medicines for headache, stomachache, nausea, and allergies.
  • Pack your toiletry bag with the essentials such as toothbrush, toothpaste, facial or wet tissues, and other hygiene products.
  • Always place a whistle and a small torch in your pocket for emergencies.
  • The weather can sometimes be unpredictable so bring an umbrella or raincoat just in case.
  • If you’re going overseas, bring international power adapters.
  • Make sure you carry mobile power banks to charge your phone and other mobile devices.
  • You might be too excited with all the preparations you’re doing but don’t forget to prepare your home! Unplug appliances, empty your fridge, ensure all taps and lights are off, store your valuables in a safe place and make sure all windows and doors are locked.

Leverage your passion for travel and commitment to helping other travellers make the most out of their holiday by turning it into a career.

There are certain skill sets that can help you gain formal knowledge of the industry.

In life, you might experience numerous setbacks that are beyond your control. You then spend a lot of time and try your very best to look for a way around the issues but it seems like whenever you solve one problem, others are just around the corner. As a result, you feel frustrated and find it hard to cope.

Instead of worrying too much, consider every challenge as an opportunity to grow. Treat the challenge as a learning experience. It makes you emotionally stronger and gives your life meaning. Continue to persevere until your situation improves no matter how restricted you feel and how limited your options are. Always be persistent and never give up.

“When we least expect it, life sets us a challenge to test our courage and willingness to change; at such a moment, there is no point in pretending that nothing has happened or in saying that we are not yet ready. The challenge will not wait. Life does not look back. A week is more than enough time for us to decide whether or not to accept our destiny.”

― Paulo Coelho

Finding solutions might take longer than you expect but as long as you are making progress, you should keep on working hard and soon you will see that everything you’ve done has already made a huge impact.

“Be the kind of person who dares to face life's challenges and overcome them rather than dodging them.”

― Roy T. Bennett

SuccessAge-March2019.png
Do you think age is a factor when it comes to pursuing your dreams? Oftentimes age is used as an excuse and we always hear other people say they are too young or too old to do what they want to do. If you can relate to that, then it’s not too late for you to change your mind!

“There is not a right or predetermined age for success; only people who finally decide to succeed. Age is in your mind!”

― Mauricio Chaves Mesén,

12 Laws of Great Entrepreneurs

If you dedicate yourself to something, you can achieve it. It's simple, but it's true, and your age is just an excuse.”

Herschel Walker, Athlete

Here are some people who you can draw inspiration from:

  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart began composing when he was 5.
  • Magnus Carlsen was only 13 when he became chess Grandmaster. He achieved the highest classical rating in history in 2014.
  • Missy Franklin was only 17 when she won five gold medals In her Olympic debut at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
  • Mark Zuckerberg was 19 when he launched Facebook in 2004.
  • Albert Einstein, the most influential physicist of the 20th century published four groundbreaking papers (one of them is the Theory of Relativity) at the age of 26.
  • Oprah Winfrey was already 32 when she officially debuted her show in 1986.

  • The Mona Lisa painting, the most well-known piece of artwork in the world was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci when he was 51.
  • Colonel Harland Sanders’ recipe was rejected more than a thousand times and after many years of failures and misfortunes, he finally hit it big at 61 when he started the KFC franchise.
  • Peter Roget invented the thesaurus at the age of 73.

It feels great whenever we hear compliments or good feedback from others. We know that our work is being noticed and appreciated and also gives us the green light to continue whatever we are doing. Constantly receiving praise and positive comments help build our self-confidence and self-esteem. But what if you know that you are doing quite well but still don’t get any approval or recognition you believe you deserve?

It’s so easy to give up and be disheartened due to lack of appreciation from the people around you especially when you know you make an extraordinary effort and always give your best in everything that you do. If you don’t get any form of validation at all, you worry more and feel unimportant. But don’t let this bring you down! Not everyone is wired to be naturally appreciative so it’s best to not expect too much. Try to avoid relying on others for confidence. Know that you are good enough, whether others approve of you or not.

“Accept yourself, love yourself, and keep moving forward.

If you want to fly, you have to give up what weighs you down.”

― Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart

“Affirmations are our mental vitamins, providing the supplementary positive thoughts we need to balance the barrage of negative events and thoughts we experience daily.”

― Tia Walkert

Practice positive self-affirmation. Do not base your self-worth on what authority figures tell you or think of you. Develop long-term positive thinking to reach your goals and back it up with positive action. Consider your strengths as a person or certain skills that you value and are meaningful to you. Then make it a daily habit to continue exploring your other talents and capabilities that you don't know about but other people do.

You may progress slowly but surely and once you’ve restructured your mindset, you can move beyond the issues then further into self-development. Do more things that you love and you know you can benefit from.

The word affirmation comes from the Latin affirmare, originally meaning "to make steady, strengthen." You will indeed find the strength to uncover your true potential from affirmation and it’s more effective if it starts with you.

Here are the lasting benefits of self-affirmation:

  • It motivates you on a different level
  • It increases your energy to perform daily tasks
  • You will establish mental clarity and become more self-aware
  • You work well even under stressful situations
  • Your cardiovascular health will improve
  • You will get a happier outlook on life

Communication is an essential skill that plays an important role in any organisation and it’s something that has to be taken seriously.

“Communication - the human connection

- is the key to personal and career success.”

― Paul J. Meyer.

When there is lack of communication, a lot of things can go wrong. Like for instance, in a dynamic multicultural and multigenerational work environment where polarised opinions, office politics and ostracism are particularly common, there would certainly be a high chance of unclear or inadequate communication.

Conflicts continue to arise not only in the workplace but everywhere we go due to misalignment and miscommunication. Failure to acknowledge and fix this problem may cause mistrust, low morale and worst case scenario, broken relationships that seem too difficult to repair. Take a moment to really see what the issues are and examine more closely to gain full understanding of the situation. The sooner we know what the root of the problem is, the sooner we can fix it.

Aside from exchanging or passing of information through speaking and writing, another way to overcome communication barriers is by means of listening. By being an active listener, you are showing your respect to other people’s opinions and you are making an effort to see their point of view. Be attentive and let others talk and finish what they have to say. Show that you genuinely want to help resolve the dispute and do not make hasty judgements. When it’s your turn to share your thoughts, choose your words carefully to prevent further conflict.

Build bridges instead of walls! Break barriers and smash bottlenecks through effective communication. This doesn’t only build confidence but also lets you open yourself to new possibilities and all the extra time and effort you put into this will be well worth it.

How is your workload? If you currently have a lot of things on your plate and your deadline is fast approaching, one of the practical solutions for this difficult situation is delegation.

The act of delegation, then, involves conferring (some of) your functions or powers on another so he or she can act on your behalf.

― thebalancesmb.com

If you are a part of a team and taking on the responsibility of a leader or perhaps a similar position of authority, delegation plays an important role in boosting your productivity.

Giving a level of autonomy definitely increases morale and promotes collaboration and innovation. When you delegate the right way, it doesn’t only help you become efficient but also give your team members a chance to develop their individual skills and look for other opportunities to grow.

"If you really want to grow as an entrepreneur, you've got to learn to delegate."

― Richard Branson.

“Are we limiting our success by not mastering the art of delegation? It’s simply a matter of preparation meeting opportunity.”

― Oprah Winfrey

“Surround yourself with the best people you can find, delegate authority, and don't interfere as long as the policy you've decided upon is being carried out.”

Ronald Reagan

“The strength of the group is the strength of the leaders.”

― Vince Lombardi

The hustle and bustle of life may cause us to lose touch with our rhythm so it’s important for us to allocate about 10 to 15 minutes a day to take a step back and see the big picture. Towards the end of the day, we have to process and understand what went well or what went wrong and this can be done through reflection.

Personal reflection is a very powerful habit. It’s definitely something that should be developed and practiced on a daily basis. Practice ultimately results in progress and can lead to a more successful and fulfilling life.

Follow effective action with quiet reflection.

From the quiet reflection will come even more effective action.

—  Peter Drucker

Reflection is a valuable learning tool because it lets us dig deeper and allow our inner wisdom to examine our actions and determine whether they are helping us or just causing us to make more mistakes.

Learning without reflection is a waste.

Reflection without learning is dangerous.

—  Confucius

Establishing this healthy habit will keep us balanced and save us a lot of time and effort by centering all our energies in positive and productive activities instead of spending time trying to suppress negative patterns.

So no matter how busy you are, take time to reflect. Talk to yourself with respect, honesty, and tough love. Put all your thoughts and experiences on paper. The act of writing reinforces discipline and motivates you to stay focused and make profound changes in life.

What is a workflow?

To put it simply, a workflow consists of the step by step process of how you do your work from start to finish. It’s composed of all the activities that happen in a sequence - all the things that you need to do in order to complete bigger tasks.

Implementing good quality workflows can certainly work wonders in any organisation especially when it comes to project management. It allows employers and managers to create clearly-established structures leaving them more time to focus on work that creates value. Employees can use this to gain a better understanding of their roles and how they relate to different departments and make team members more accountable for their work. It’s certainly is a modern solution for the workplace.

Workflows can also be implemented in real life and they don’t have to be complicated. You can create some basic workflows to help in process improvements and elimination of inefficiencies in your daily routine, therefore, increasing your output and productivity. Aside from that, it also leads to better communication as well as a quick and easy resolution to bottlenecks.

Visualising your workflow is a very important step. You can start by creating a diagram that can be used as a graphic representation of the steps needed in order for you to reach the goals you want to achieve. If you want to take your workflow diagrams to the next level, there are also many workflow management tools out there that you can use for free:

  • Create workflow diagrams/flowcharts
    • Simple or complex diagrams/flowcharts can be designed using draw.io, canva.com, smartdraw.com or diagrameditor.com
  • Use digital workflow management solutions
    • Work smarter not harder using cloud software such as zoho.com, trello.com, monday.com or cflowapps.com

Your stress level matters a lot. If you are currently experiencing a lot of stress and you’re not doing anything about it, you probably need an intervention ASAP! Here are the most common symptoms of stress:

  • Psychological signs are lack of motivation, anxiety, depression, restlessness, irritability or anger.
  • Physiological signs include headaches, chest pain, stomach upset and fatigue.
  • Changes in behaviour such as smoking or drinking too much, social withdrawal, not eating or overeating and angry outbursts.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could study smarter (not harder), get good grades, and lead a balanced life? That’s why we thought of sharing you the best ways to learn more effectively. Also feel free to comment or message us on our social media channels or email us your study tips and we will feature them on our website and Facebook page.

Get in the zone

Create the ideal study space. This also a good way to get yourself in the mood to study. Also, limit distractions! leave your phone alone and stay off social media. You can also listen to music but we recommend to choose the ones without lyrics. In fact, music can help you memorise better! It can launch your mind into a flowing (optimised) and remembering mode.

Sleep well, exercise & take breaks

You absorb information better when you’re well-rested and well-fed – and even better after you’ve exercised! Consume nutritious foods to get your brain powered up. When it comes to food, choose nuts, berries, and yogurt instead of chips and other junk food! Stay hydrated and take a one minute break every 30 minutes to stretch and move in between your study sessions.

Make a study schedule

Create a time chart of activities and divide them into short chunks. Shorter study sessions help the synapses* in your brain process information much better than lots of information in long sessions. Avoid the last-minute, all-night, self-induced study session because it can impair your memory and concentration.

*A synapse is the tiny gap across which a nerve cell, or neuron, can send an impulse to another neuron. When all your synapses are firing, you're focused and your mind feels electric.

Use flash cards

You might be thinking that flashcards are a thing of the past… No, they’re not! Your brain stores information better when you’ve written something down so this means you’ll probably have to lose the highlighter and start writing the essentials on flash cards. Read more about the Leitner Flash Card System - it’s the implementation of the principle of spaced repetition at increasing intervals.

Stress is a state of mental or emotional strain caused by negative circumstances. When we feel overwhelmed by a challenging or dangerous situation, our first instinct is to panic because it’s our body’s natural response to adversity. It’s simply inevitable and something that a lot of people struggle to overcome every day.

It’s very important for us to catch early warning signs of stress before it reaches an unhealthy level.

The most common stressors are:

  • Personal problems
  • Studies
  • Work
  • Unemployment

As much as we want to get rid of stress, it’s not good to just simply ignore it. Running away will not solve the problem, this will only make things a lot worse than it already is. It’s more ideal to face our stressors or, better yet, create and apply strategies to reduce stress and cope with the things that cause us physical and mental pressure.

There are a lot of healthy ways to manage stress effectively so follow these tips if you want to have a happier, worry-free year:

  • Take Control. Taking charge is the foundation of stress management. avoid situations that would more likely give you stress.
  • Keep a Stress Diary. Write down your stress triggers, how you felt, how you responded to a particular situation. As you list everything down, you will notice some patterns. Whatever you discover about yourself can help you experiment with different techniques and strategies that you can use to manage and cope.
  • Try to change the situation, if you can. This can be done by avoiding or altering your stressor. This will help you feel less overwhelmed and may even help you gain a new perspective.
  • Accept that there are things that you can’t change. Sometimes you just have to accept that there are things in life that you can never change no matter how hard you try. Choose to focus your time and energy more productively.
  • Manage your expectations and adjust your standards. Expectation is the heart of stress. Make sure you don’t set overly-high expectations of yourself and at the same time, don’t let the expectations of other people burn you out.
  • Unwind. Recharge your battery after a stressful workday. Disconnect yourself from anything work-related and do something that you enjoy such as listening to music, taking a stroll at the park, reading your favourite book or gardening.

Stress and burnout are different.

When stress levels skyrocket and you feel that you are no longer in control, this may cause extreme distress and could possibly lead to burnout. If you’ve become aware that you’re on the brink of burnout or perhaps already experiencing burnout, it’s time to do something before it takes its toll on you. Click here to read more about how to combat burnout.

“It’s really clear that the most precious resource we all have is time.” Steve Jobs

Time management is a skill that takes a while to develop and it’s also different for every person. There’s absolutely no one-size-fits-all approach to this, however, there is something called “Time Management Spectrum” that can help you gauge your productivity on a daily basis.

Understanding how you work and how much you can do will give you an idea of what methods work best for you and eventually be able to share your techniques to others and based on this, perhaps they can also discover their place in the spectrum and establish their own system.

Take a look at the spectrum below. Which side are you closer to in terms of how you handle your tasks?

You don’t plan at all. You just go with the flow.

Moderate. You have a list of tasks but you are able to adapt your productivity to your day’s circumstances.

Rigorous. You have a rigid system and always make sure you finish whatever is in your extensive to-do list.

Wherever you are in the spectrum, following a guide can help you plan your day better. There are many solutions, and you can find some of them below:

  • Start early. It’s great to work when you feel calm and your mind is clear.
  • Track how you spend your time. Use apps to track your progress and alert you when you lose focus.
  • Use the OHIO Strategy. O.H.I.O. stands for Only Handle It Once. Processing a task multiple times will only take up more of your time and energy.
  • Work in sprints and take regular breaks to help you stay productive.
  • Stop multitasking. Select one goal at a time and maintain focus, this will lead to greater productivity and to also avoid spreading yourself too thin.
  • Avoid Attention Leaks. Nowadays, our attention spans are getting shorter. When you lose concentration, your tasks take longer to complete so try your very best to not feed your distractions.

“The ability to stay focused will be the superpower of the 21st century.

Focus is the new I.Q.” ― Cal Newport

  • Set strict boundaries. Learn to say no and communicate to others in a polite but direct manner.
  • Procrastination is your worst enemy. This is more of an emotional issue and a huge obstacle to success. Click here to read more about procrastination.
  • Use your downtime to plan and reflect what you need to do the next day.
  • Make this your golden rule: If it can be done today, do it today.

“You may delay, but time will not.” – Benjamin Franklin

How do you get things done each day? Are you able to reach all your goals with less time, effort and mistakes? If your answer is NO, perhaps you need to work on your productivity and efficiency while making sure that you are doing your tasks the right way.

Use the MIT solution

Focus on your MITs first thing in the morning. M.I.T. stands for Most Important Things. There should only be a maximum of 3 things on your list then out of the 3, select which one is the most important.

“If it’s your job to eat a frog, it’s best to do it first thing in the morning. And If it’s your job to eat two frogs, it’s best to eat the biggest one first.” — Mark Twain

Here are some tips on how to develop the ability to identify and complete the most urgent and important task first:

  • Set S.M.A.R.T.E.R. goals. SMARTER stands for specific, meaningful, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. Don’t push yourself too hard by setting impossible goals.
  • Establish milestones to help you stay focused, empowered and on track.
  • Create a weekly plan. It’s better to write everything down to make them real and more concrete.
  • Make an assessment of your weekly plan to determine your daily MITs.

“I always wanted to be someone better the next day than I was the day before.” Sidney Poitier

To build an extraordinary life of your dreams, you need to develop daily positive routines. Being positive and staying that way can be a real challenge especially when you experience difficulties, failures, and uncertainties but don’t let this stop you from achieving excellence and greatness.

It could take a great deal of motivation to get things done day in and day out. Working to become your best self should not be perceived as a burden but as a great opportunity. Rest if you feel tired but continue to fight the uphill battles. Don’t stop no matter what!

Get ready to level up your life by practicing these high-performance habits:

  • Start the day by getting a nice dose of negative ions, they create positive vibes and are actually great for your health! Try to recall what you have learned from your Chemistry class - negative ions produce biochemical reactions that increase levels of the mood chemical serotonin that helps alleviate depression and stress. You can get negative ions from moving air and water. Boost your mood and pump the positivity by getting a hot shower or go for a walk in the park.
  • Cultivate and maintain an attitude of gratitude. There are a lot of benefits that come with gratitude - it can shift your perception and change how you see the world. So from now on, start taking note of the things that you are grateful for.
  • Develop and enhance your soft skills to help you in your career as well as to successfully navigate through life. These are practical skills that characterise how you deal with other people, respond to challenges and manage emotions. Some examples include interpersonal and communication skills, strategic and problem-solving skills, teamwork and leadership skills.
  • Never cut corners. This undesirable behaviour is characterised by skipping steps that are important to a task in order to complete it much quicker than normal. According to research, people who frequently do this are more impulsive, undisciplined, non-conforming and they tend to be morally compromised. Although there are people that have achieved good outcomes by making shortcuts, their actions may result in harsh consequences that’s why this is highly discouraged.
  • Always look on the bright side. Life can be tough but don’t lose sight of the light at the end of the tunnel. Believe that you will eventually reap the rewards of your productivity and hard work. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up, put your game face on and never give up!

The most common factor of highly-successful people is they choose growth over comfort. They are passionate leaders and strong advocates that demonstrate commitment and always do their work with energy and enthusiasm. They are extremely resilient and unshakable amidst of all the chaos, bustle and noise around them.

Self-improvement doesn’t only lead to one’s success but can also help people to succeed. It’s good to be competitive, but it’s also lonely to be the only one at the top so work on reaching your goals and at the same time, try to influence others around you to reach their full potential.

“When you are living the best version of yourself, you inspire others to live the best versions of themselves.”Steve Maraboli, Unapologetically You: Reflections on Life and the Human Experience

If you want to know how you can truly become the best version of you, here are some useful tips to get you started:

Put yourself first

Aside from getting enough sleep, eating right, and constant exercise, you also need to look after your emotional well-being because it’s a part of your holistic health. Safeguard and strengthen it to be able to cope with the ups and downs of life.

Stop pleasing other people! Every time you try so hard to please others, you lose yourself. Learn how to say NO. If you constantly play the role of the doormat, you will always be taken advantage of and eventually feel your stress levels skyrocket and could experience an episode of burnout. Click here to learn more about burnout and what you can do to stop it.

Take care of your mind

Your thoughts can consciously or unconsciously influence your actions. If you’re constantly feeling down, you need to reprogram your thoughts in order to stay positive. Try to visualise and make your visions concrete by creating an action plan. This will serve as your guide and help you make more mindful decisions. Positive thoughts can also help you in choosing your words wisely so you can communicate with others a lot better.

Be Kind

Every person in this world is unique and every life is a unique journey. Be kind to others. Create a paradigm shift in how you treat them. Do not be quick to judge without knowing them first. Criticisms are only okay if they are constructive and not destructive because this can potentially damage another person’s self-worth and self-esteem. Most importantly, be kind to yourself!

Constantly develop your skills

Learn something new. Education has a positive effect on an individual. It brings a greater depth of understanding, theoretical knowledge, and analytical skill. A professional qualification can help you gain confidence, improve your career prospects and overall status in life. Nationally recognised and accredited training is definitely highly valued and can be extremely rewarding on so many levels. Click here to discover online courses that can help you get your career in gear.

Surround yourself with stellar people

The circle of friends you choose to have in your life speaks volumes about who you are. Acquire wisdom from the proverb “You are the company you keep”. No matter how good you are as a person, bad company can still influence your good behaviour so it’s better to hang out with friends that will support and lift you up rather than drag you down.

“Surround yourself with the dreamers and the doers, the believers and thinkers, but most all, surround yourself with those who see greatness within you, even when you don't see it yourself.”  Edmund Lee

Don’t fear success

This might sound strange to you but the fear of success actually hides in some people’s subconscious. They get too overwhelmed and simply can’t handle success when it comes faster than expected. There are also other different scenarios such as added responsibilities, high expectations and living a totally different life than before. Always remember, great leaders, visionaries and game-changers are always ready and willing to step out of their comfort zone. Do not fear change. Even if you fail, don’t think that all your efforts are wasted. Just keep moving forward and you will soon be drawn closer to what you want to achieve.

Strive to become the best version of yourself!

We are all leaders. We have the ability to demonstrate leadership wherever we are and whatever we do. It’s not just about a specific title, position or status in life - we can step up and accept responsibility. We all have a level of accountability to right the wrongs around us and provide solutions to problems and stand behind the decisions that we make. To make a lasting impact as a leader, the perfect virtue to gain is by being proactive.

A proactive person has a lot of great qualities and habits. Being proactive means you are always able to take a step back, see the bigger picture and focus on long-term goals. You’re change-oriented and invariably thrive in any given situation, continually aspire to seek opportunities and willing to undergo self-improvement even during good times.

To develop a proactive personality, you have to start with taking control of your life. List down your goals and the activities that you need to do in order to achieve them. Create a mind map or a flowchart if you have to. When you plan things, having foresight will help you become aware of potential obstacles and risks that you might face instead of just instinctively reacting to stimuli. Be ever-ready by thinking of a Plan A, Plan B, Plan C, so on and so forth. Consider visualising for alternatives. Accept that problems are part of the equation but also have a positive mindset and strong faith that there’s more than one solution to a problem.

Establish core values and standards as guidelines. Do not settle if something doesn’t feel right or you think it’s just semi-satisfying. Direct your own life instead of being pushed by external influences. A lot of things can go wrong if you let others decide for you. Control the flow, not go with the flow. Invest all your time and effort in making conscious and intelligent choices in life and do your best to follow-through because the most excellent preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today.

“If you don't design your own life plan, chances are you'll fall into someone else's plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.” --Jim Rohn

What’s the next step? Take part! Be available to help others. True leaders beget great leaders. The example you show to others will inspire them to do the same and this positive flow of energy will also give you the motivation to do better than you do now.

The “paradigm” concept started in the early 1960’s by the philosopher Thomas Kuhn and since then, the term has been widely used in the world of Psychology, Politics, Sports, Medicine and Business. It helped Scientists create theoretical frameworks by providing clarity in terms of goal-setting and direction in their scientific research and other activities within a particular discipline. Some paradigm theories that we know are Newton’s theory of gravity, Darwin’s theory of evolution and Einstein’s theory of relativity.

According to macmillandictionary.com, the word paradigm means:

a set of ideas that are used for understanding or explaining something, especially in a particular subject.”

How can we relate this to our daily lives?

If we take a closer look at history, we would notice that there is certainly a strong connection between paradigm and progress. When personal computers, mobile phones, the internet and all sorts of communication tools were invented, our lives were suddenly transformed completely. Most of the changes we experienced during this digital paradigm shift are positive and working in our favour.

Nowadays, the paradigm shift concept is not only used in the philosophy of science but can also be linked to personality development.

It’s considered as a fundamental change of how an individual or society view things in the world - it’s all about the transformation of human systems dynamics, including patterns of complexity in learning, development, management, and supervision in diverse environments. This may sound very complicated, but in reality, it’s actually something that we deal with in daily life.

When we choose to undergo a paradigm shift, big changes happen. Our perspectives and mindset take a 180-degree turn. This can be compared to demolishing a house and building a new one rather than just renovating it.

“If you want small changes in your life, work on your attitude. But if you want big and primary changes, work on your paradigm.”

-Stephen Covey

“Don't underestimate the power of your vision to change the world. Whether that world is your office, your community, an industry or a global movement, you need to have a core belief that what you contribute can fundamentally change the paradigm or way of thinking about problems.”

-Leroy Hood

Your personal or professional life might not be the way you want it to be at the moment, but you can always do something about it. You have to start by throwing negative beliefs outside the window and stop thinking that you’re a victim of your circumstances, that your current situation limits you from achieving success. Replace negative thoughts by adapting the “anything is possible” paradigm. The challenges you face right now can be turned into opportunities for innovation. You can control your life and the results you want to achieve - make this your core value from now on.

“A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds.”

-Francis Bacon

“When fate hands you a lemon, make lemonade.”

-Dale Carnegie

One of the most popular quotes about productivity is “If not now, then when”, however, its essence is often missed. We are all guilty somehow of pushing things aside and doing them at a later time.

It’s so easy to walk away from impending tasks and tell yourself to finish them afterward. The longer these tasks are ignored, the more difficult it will be to finish them in the long run. The results could also be more drastic - if things do not go as planned, everything can end up in chaos, stress, disappointment, and frustration.

Another thing that you always keep in the back burner is your dreams. You could have so many reasons for trying not to pursue what you really want to do in life. What’s holding you back? Is it fear? Are you scared of making mistakes, of losing everything you have? Is uncertainty making you feel very uncomfortable? These negative feelings will only make you lose sight of getting started or not even wanting to try.

What are you waiting for? Is there really such thing as “the right time”? You have probably wasted too much time waiting for the right moment when you can start doing something right now. Sometimes ‘later’ becomes ‘never’. If you decide to take action today, commit to it, be accountable, and put yourself to work every day.

“People are capable, at any time in their lives, of doing what they dream of.”

– Paulo Coelho

Give it a shot. Never abandon your pursuit. We only get to live one life, so make it better. You owe it to yourself. Be bold, be brave... If not now, then when? Don’t give up! success is just around the corner.

When you habitually avoid or intentionally delay starting or finishing a task that needs to be accomplished and let it linger on the to-do list for hours, days, or even weeks due to various reasons, you could be a victim of a mysterious and potentially dangerous force called procrastination. Pouring all your strength in completing a certain task is like trying to bring the same poles of a magnet together and no matter how hard you try, they only repel.

The procrastinator’s favourite words are “later” and “tomorrow”. Amidst of all the urgent assignments, tight deadlines and unfinished projects piling up, they are often being put off in favour of checking social media sites, playing video games, online shopping, binge-watching shows on tv or sometimes even prioritising trivial things. There are so many distractions everywhere that make it even more difficult to focus on what should be done.

This extremely bad habit has a lot of harmful effects on one’s life. Students often get poor grades or fail in school. Employees have unsatisfactory work performance. It’s simply inevitable. On a positive note, since procrastination is considered as a bad habit, there are possible be ways that can be done to get rid of this self-defeating behaviour pattern. For this to work, you have to be absolutely committed to moving forward. However, once you decide to nip it in the bud before it becomes a more serious issue, changes would only happen gradually and not overnight.

Here are common reasons why we procrastinate and some suggestions on how to tackle it:

  • Feeling lazy. We put off doing things simply because we don’t feel like it. One way to avoid laziness is to be reminded of the consequences when we don’t take action. The Pareto principle (also known as 80/20 rule) can help to overcome laziness. It states that “80% of the outputs come from 20% of the inputs.” Determine the most important task and focus on it. Then eliminate the other tasks in the to-do list afterward.
  • Feeling burned out. It’s very hard to focus when we feel physically and mentally exhausted. It seems like that are a million tasks on the to-do list, it’s easy to shut down.Click here to learn more about burnout and what you can do to stop it.
  • Fear. We are too scared to fail. Perhaps we are shy or afraid of rejection. Let’s learn how to overcome and conquer our fears. Nothing will happen if we do not have the courage to face them.
  • Perfectionism. Overly demanding standards keep us from even getting started. This is also related to fear of failure. Just think that we won’t be able to do things and improve our skills unless we practice. We can’t practice unless we implement. It doesn’t matter if we make mistakes because we can learn from them and move on.
  • Lack of self-confidence. We won’t do something if we don’t think we can do it. There are several factors why we feel like this but the main reason is usually self-doubt. If you need a skill upgrade, get one. This can help overcome fear and build up self-confidence to achieve success.Click here to learn how to solve the confidence gap.

“You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.”

–Abraham Lincoln

Burnout-Sept2018.png
According to businessdictionary.com burnout means

Feeling of physical and emotional exhaustion, due to stress from working with people under difficult or demanding conditions. Burnout is followed by signs such as chronic fatigue, quickness to anger and suspicion, and susceptibility to colds, headaches, and fevers.

It seems like career burnout is becoming more common these days and the typical advice given to people is to go on a holiday to relax, unwind, clear the head and keep a safe distance from all the stressful responsibilities in the workplace. It’s a good suggestion, however, holidays do not cure chronic burnout. This is only a type of band-aid approach and doesn’t completely eliminate the root of the problem.

Burnouts can occur in any industry - financial, tech, retail, infrastructure, health, the list could go on and on… This is one of the top reasons why people take sick days or just quit their job. Sadly, employees are not the only ones who suffer because of this insidious epidemic. The whole company is affected too. Burnout leads to inefficiency and lower productivity, then eventually leads to a reduction in quality.

If you’ve become aware that you’re on the brink of burnout or perhaps already experiencing burnout, it’s time to do something before it takes its toll on you. Get to know some of the major causes and what you can do to stop it.

  • Limited resources and lack of support are major obstacles that make it more difficult for you to do your job. You constantly feel frustrated and exhausted because you are expected to perform well with fewer resources.
  • Time pressure is also a contributing factor. Extreme time constraints and unreasonable and highly aggressive deadlines can push you over the edge.
  • Trying hard to balance work-life can waste your time, effort and energy. Balance is good but integrating the two is a better option. Click here to read more about work-life integration.
  • Your job doesn’t fit your interests and skills. There seems to be some sort of mismatch between your personality and motivations with your current job situation. You might need a career change. Click here to read more about discovering your true calling.
  • Bullying in the workplace is also one of the most common causes of burnout. Perhaps you are being constantly criticised, discriminated, intimidated or harassed. The more anxious you become, the more you get targeted for abuse and therefore leads to depression and then burnout.

Some useful tips on how to recover from burnout:

  • Start by identifying the root cause of your burnout. There could be multiple causes but you need to address the main cause first and then move on to the next. Keep a journal and write down ways on how to manage your situation to eliminate sources of stress and unhappiness.
  • Focus on your physical and mental health. Eat healthy, drink plenty of water and exercise regularly. Rest well and improve your sleeping habits. Always think positive. Click here if you need a motivation boost. Having a healthy mind and body enhances the quality of your life.
  • Reassess your long-term goals. As we get older, our needs and interests often change and this could trigger a domino effect of other related changes. If you have become aware of your real goals and aspirations and determined that you need to tread a different path, then get yourself ready for a career change. Overcome and Conquer Your Fears and don’t be afraid to try something new.

SuccessJourney-Oct2018.png

No two paths to success are alike. Each person’s journey is unique as a fingerprint or a snowflake, thus success is relative to the person who strives for it.

If you aim to be successful, the first and most important question that you must ask yourself is “What do I need to do to achieve what I want?”

Success is a mindset. It’s not about who you are, but about what you do. It doesn’t matter if you do or don’t have the necessary tools and resources, the quality of your actions will lead you to reach the goals you desire and keep growing from there.

What is your current belief system? If you think you need to make big changes in your life, start by building a strong mental and emotional foundation. Here are some of the most impactful strategies to start with:

The happiness project

Don’t get caught up in the “What ifs”. Learn to be happy with your current state and develop a sense of contentment. If you’re feeling down and currently lack motivation that you need to move forward, here are some of the best inspirational and motivational quotes that you can use as a pick-me-up.

Read good books and learn new things

Develop a reading habit, challenge yourself to read something that interests you on a daily basis. Reading has a lot of hidden benefits, it can Improve your vocabulary, broaden your perspective and enrich your mind. Studying can also expand your horizons. Education has a positive effect on an individual. It brings a greater depth of understanding, theoretical knowledge, and analytical skill.

"You're never too old to start learning, and you're never too young to aim high and achieve great things." - Asa Hutchinson

Keep a journal

Set goals and keep them in a journal so you can keep track of your progress. It doesn’t matter if they are short-term or long-term. Goal-setting is an important part of success. It gives you more clarity. Jotting things down in a journal will give you a clear purpose of what you want to achieve in life.

Resilience is an essential skill

Be like bamboo. During a hurricane, the bamboo bends rather than break. Being resilient means you won’t allow yourself to become a victim of circumstance. Do not let negative thoughts drag you down. Resilience is a skill that can be cultivated. Make this your mission. Continue to work on reaching your goals despite setbacks, despite complications and you will always rise above the fray. Don’t give up!

Dig a hole and bury your bad habits

Throughout your life, you develop some habits that you’re not proud of. You may already be aware that these habits are toxic but you remain stuck in the same place for a long time. A common bad habit is procrastination. It’s a very unhealthy and futile behaviour pattern that is typical at home, in school and in the workplace. It could be hard to change as you age and old habits might seem too hard to break but if you want to be successful, start building good habits while you still can and consider shifting your paradigm.

Past is past

Your past doesn’t define your future so don't look back on life with regret!

“What’s past is past, nothing can change that. But the future can be different if we choose to make it so. We have to cultivate a vision of a happier, more peaceful future and make the effort now to bring it about. This is no time for complacency, hope lies in the action we take.” -- Dalai Lama

Say goodbye to work-life balance and try integrating your work and life instead! Many people have struggled to achieve balance but failed miserably so it’s now considered a myth. Aside from being unrealistic, it’s also known to be too subjective because its definition depends on the individual’s personal feelings and circumstance. One’s priorities also extremely affect how balance is construed. Attempting to attain the so-called balance has become a debilitating chore when it was supposed to be a solution to all our problems.

The term work-life integration started to make waves in 2017. Integration is all about not separating work from your personal life but learning how to connect the two instead. It’s quite radical but it quickly became the new norm because it’s a trendier, more fitting and exciting alternative for those who aim to succeed in their careers and daily private life activities.

W-L integration: the 21st-century formula for success

The flexibility offered by the W-L integration concept is ideal and definitely feasible. It can work well for those who are juggling a lot of things at the same time such as kids, work, social life, education, and all other activities on the to-do list. Here are some suggestions on how to make it work for you:

  • Plan well. Know your priorities and list them down starting from the most important down to the least important.
  • Know your boundaries. Know when to unplug yourself from job responsibilities. You also need to recharge in order to be more efficient so you can work smarter, not harder.
  • Consider change. You don’t have to perfectly execute the W-L concept to make it work. If you see a bottleneck, consider making some changes, adjust as you go and be ready to rebound quickly!
  • Self-discipline. Distractions are everywhere and sometimes hard to avoid. It’s so easy to get sidetracked and be tempted to procrastinate but no matter what, try your best to control your desires and impulses and stay focused.
  • Self-care. Look after yourself. This should always be a part of your agenda. It’s not just about having bubble baths, getting an 8-hour sleep or spending a day at the spa. Self-care should also encompass overall health and mental well-being, good hygiene and responsible intake of food and medication.
  • Healthy attitude. Having a positive mindset is very important. If this is practiced every day, you will be able to create an excellent culture and environment where you can consistently thrive. Another benefit of having a bright attitude is that you can set a good example for the people around you and perhaps, you can share this concept with them as well.

Why do people switch careers? There could be a hundred reasons why this happens but it’s just usually due to one thing - CHANGE. As the wise Greek philosopher, Heraclitus once said, “The only thing that Is constant is change.” We all face changes in different aspects of our daily life in some way and perhaps sometimes, we might not even see them clearly but these changes are occurring nonetheless. We get older, our needs and interests often change and this could trigger a domino effect of other related changes. It’s simply inevitable.

Focus on Building Career 2.0

You have seen the signs, and they are loud and clear. The fact that you’ve got the wrong job or the wrong field makes you constantly uninspired, unfulfilled and lacking enthusiasm. The stress you face at work makes you dread going into the office every day. You might also be taking sick days even when you’re not really sick. According to research, over 60% of working adults are unhappy with their career situation but the big problem is, they chose to settle. Don’t be one of them!

Here are practical tips for you to have a successful career change:

  • Start with an honest self-assessment. Have you truly discovered your true calling? Before you jump into a completely different career, make sure you have determined the type of work that you really want to do so you won’t regret your decisions.
  • Gain the necessary skills and additional qualifications by upskilling and/or retraining. Read more about upskilling or reskilling here. Professional qualifications matter - Nationally recognised and accredited training is definitely highly valued and can be extremely rewarding on so many levels.
"Qualifications reveal much more about a person than just academic prowess. It's not just about getting a job/career. The benefits affect all parts of life: intellectual, social sporting, personal, artistic, ethical and so much more." - ANDREW MAIN

You can read more about this topic here.

  • Brush up on your interview skills. Click here to view the essential job interview checklist.
  • Career transitions are possible at any age. No matter how old you are, you have to be flexible and adaptable. These are two very important skills that employers value in a candidate. You might not have enough experience in the role that you want to apply for, but your attitude can make a difference. Have an agile mindset.
  • Craft a sustainable career for yourself. Job search and career management are constantly changing and they are typically due to shifts in the economy, technology, and other key events. “A sustainable career is dynamic and flexible; it features continuous learning, periodic renewal, the security that comes from employability, and a harmonious fit with your skills, interests, and values. Read more about it here.
Be aware of your real goals and aspirations to create a brand new professional life. Pursue what you truly love and be willing to start over. It’s the season of change - a time for a fresh start!

Building a new career is not easy. It could be very scary at first and you may also commit a lot of mistakes, but it’s not impossible to achieve! If you don’t do it now, you could be stuck in the same spot forever! Is self-doubt holding you back? Try to overcome and conquer your fears, break out of your comfort zone, and eventually, you will gain the confidence you need to succeed.

“The hardest thing to do is leaving your comfort zone. But you have to let go of the life you’re familiar with and take the risk to live the life you dream about.” -T. Arigo

You might be thinking, “is staying in my comfort zone really such a bad thing?”

The answer is a big YES! It’s too dangerous that it could be something that can potentially destroy one’s future.

“A comfort zone is a place that is very secure and protected, but where nothing is able to flourish.”

Warning signs that you are stuck in your comfort zone:
  • You do not have career goals
  • You don’t like risks and only do what’s safe and easy
  • You’re afraid to experience new things
  • You feel bored with your current situation
  • You have a wishy-washy attitude
  • You always procrastinate

"Before anything else, preparation is the key to success." --Alexander Graham Bell

“Fail to Plan and You Plan to Fail” --Benjamin Franklin

“Give me 6 hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first 4 sharpening the axe.” –Abraham Lincoln

You might be in the middle of a job search and currently have interviews lined up. We all know very well that planning is a very crucial part of the process, however, all the careful planning that you do can fall apart once anxiety sets in. This may sound daunting especially if it’s your first time but don’t let the thought overwhelm you. Instead, use this feeling as a motivator - it can also drive you to perform better!

Here are some tips to help you out before, during and after the interview:

Before the interview
  • Do your homework. Look at the company website or blog to learn more about the company, what their key products and/or services are, which industries do they work in and how big they are in terms of employee size and revenue. It’s good to do a competitor research as well.
  • Thoroughly read the job ad again, take note of the main responsibilities and required skills and map it to your own skills, educational background, and job experiences. If you have questions, jot them down so you don’t forget.
  • At the beginning of an interview, candidates are usually asked “Can you walk me through your resume?” so it’s good to review your resume the day before. Print extra copies for your and the interviewer. Having spare copies shows initiative and preparation. These are strong qualities that the interviewer will take note of and appreciate.
  • Choose an appropriate outfit. Your clothing choice doesn’t necessarily have to be high-end, you just need to make an effort to look presentable. This is also a sign of respect for the company as well as the person interviewing you. So pay attention to your grooming to leave a good first impression.
  • Write all the details in your job interview journal if you have one. Take note of the company name, address, time of the interview and the name of the interviewer.

During the interview
  • Be sure to turn up at the right place and the right time. If you think you’re lost and will be running late, it is common decency and professional courtesy to apologise for your lateness. Call and let them know your ETA.
  • Make sure your phone and other electronic devices are on silent.
  • Sell yourself (up to a certain degree). Present yourself with confidence but not to the point that you already sound like you are the only qualified candidate and the answer to your all of your employer’s problems.
  • Choose your words wisely. You may encounter some common interview questions but try not to respond with empty clichés. Be unique, memorable, specific and keep it brief.
  • Take down notes if necessary so you don’t forget important details.
  • Show your personality for them to see if you will fit in with the company culture of their working environment.
  • Towards the end of the interview, Make sure you're clear about the next steps. Ask what the next process is and when and how you can expect to hear from them.

After the interview
  • Drop a line to the interviewer and let him/her know that you appreciate his/her time and the opportunity you were given. This will speak volumes about your commitment to the position. If you didn’t get the job, you can ask for constructive feedback. This can help you do better in your next round of interviews with other companies in the future.
Keep in mind that getting prepared is a job itself. Sharpen the axe, as Lincoln said. A checklist is very useful but ticking all the boxes on your list will not be enough for you to land the job you like, you have to do more than that. But don’t stress, just do your best… You’ve got this!

Have you ever woken up one day and asked yourself “Why am I here? What’s my real purpose?”, this means that your mission in life is still unclear and you need to find your why. German philosopher Frederick Nietzsche once said, ‘He who has a why can endure any how.’ Everyone has a why. This is something that inspires you and gives you a sense of fulfillment in whatever you do. Knowing your why is the first step and the most important if you want to find out your true calling.

Every person is different. We develop aspects of individuality from our experiences, philosophies, socio-economic environment and genetic constitution that’s why there’s no single pathway for discovering life’s purpose. There are some blogs out there that say “Find your true purpose in 10 easy steps”, but the truth is, this process is always evolving and certainly not easy at all. Oftentimes, there would be a lot of challenges along the way but you continue to step out of your comfort zone because you know it’s going to be worth it. It will be epic and definitely life-changing.

There are some essential keywords that can help you start your journey. Begin with clarity. Lack of clarity makes you feel that you’re trapped in an invisible prison and this is perhaps one of the most unpleasant human experiences to endure. An example is staying at a job for months or years for which you are completely unsuited. You will never achieve that inner desire to be great at your job. When you find clarity, you know you are going in the right direction and watch yourself reach greater heights. Sometimes you can find clarity from the people around you, especially those who are close to you. It’s amazing how much they know the real you and can clearly see what you should be doing when you cannot see it yourself.

Another keyword is vision. Always have a positive vision of the future. Let it be your guide. When you already know what you want, it’s time to take action. Visualisation is a powerful technique - great leaders and athletes use this to excel in their chosen field. Some of the things you can do is to write down your plans in detail or create a vision board in order to produce a picture of what your ideal life would look like. It’s also important to take note that you won’t get the life you want overnight but with consistent and persistent actions, you will eventually reach your goal.

It was mentioned earlier that each person’s journey is different and because of this, the processes and outcomes will also be different. Our past decisions have consequences that may put us in certain circumstances that we cannot control. When we get to this point, no matter how hard it is, we can always control our attitude, approach and response to make the situation better. This is when the keyword leverage comes in. The concept of leverage allows you to put yourself in a position to your best advantage. Use whatever you have. Your talent, your skills, your confidence, your wit - these are the effective tools that you have in you that you can always use to ignite your passion.

“If you organise your life around your passion, you can turn your passion into your story and then turn your story into something bigger – something that matters.” –Blake Mycoskie

Motivation isn't one-size-fits-all. According to research, our brains are wired to have 2 types of motivation - internal (intrinsic) or external (extrinsic). Internal motivation is coming from within - our deep-rooted desires have the highest motivational power while external motivation is geared towards external rewards that a person can earn such as titles, recognition, bonuses, perks and many others.

There might be a huge difference between each type of motivation but the relationship is not entirely polarised. Although they are different, there could still be an intersection in between and this is called the motivational ecosystem.

Do you feel that you currently lack the motivation that you need in order to reach your goals? Try to tap into your bigger purpose. This gives a deeper meaning to the objective you seek. Visit this blog and social media channels for daily motivational quotes that will help push you forward on your journey.

You can also share our motivational quotes to spread positive vibes to others!

PaperVsDigital-Aug2018.png

Do you feel that you need a break from staring at your computer screens or mobile devices and switch to the old-fashioned way of reading and writing everything on paper or do you think this method is already obsolete and that digital consumption of information is way better?

We asked our newsletter subscribers to cast their vote and here are the results*.

PaperVsDigital-paper-Aug2018.png

PaperVsDigital-digital-Aug2018.png

PaperVsDigital-both-Aug2018.png

PaperVsDigital-undecided-Aug2018.png

Based on the votes, the result is a tie between paper and digital platforms!

The debate on whether digital will completely take over paper is not going to end. For now, we can say that digital may be the way of the future but our relationship with physical paper is not over yet because of its emotional impact and numerous benefits. Digital also has its unique properties such as instantaneous access, environmentally friendly, and much more.

Rather than switching to all-digital, perhaps a combination of paper and the convenience and accessibility of digital will perform best.

This question is commonly used as a writing prompt or as a job interview question by hiring managers to candidates. When you come across this question, who is the first person that comes to mind? Have you ever thought that perhaps you are one to someone else?

According to dictionary.com, the word ‘hero’ means a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character, someone who has special achievements, abilities, or personal qualities and is regarded as a role model.

A person doesn’t need to have divine superpowers and also doesn’t have to be a police officer, a firefighter, a soldier, an athlete or a popular celebrity to be recognised as a hero. They could be regular, everyday people who influence you, inspire you and have an impact in your life in every small or big way.

Different people have different definitions of heroism, hence, would have various responses in terms of their choice of heroes and the reasons behind their choices. It’s important to give emphasis to “why” a certain person is chosen than the “who” the actual person is, or what he or she might represent.

Knowing who your heroes are say a lot of things about you. It actually determines what traits or qualities you value the most in others. Researchers have found that helping, altruism, advocacy, and other ways of standing up for what’s right are specific actions that are synonymous with valor and are usually admired and emulated.

Our world needs heroes - men and women who are relentless, have strong principles and willpower, are willing to commit to a life of service and to put others’ well-being above their own. Every one of us can be a hero when placed in the right circumstance and with the right tools, regardless of our age and our current situation in life. It’s time to take action!

“Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary.” --Gerard Way

“Hard times don't create heroes. It is during the hard times when the 'hero' within us is revealed.” --Bob Riley

“Heroes are never perfect, but they're brave, they're authentic, they're courageous, determined, discreet, and they've got grit.” --Wade Davis

What are you afraid of? Here is a list of the types of fears that are commonly experienced in daily life:

  • Fear of speaking in public - Glossophobia or speech anxiety
  • Fear of crowds - Enochlophobia. This fear is closely related to Ochlophobia and Demophobia.
  • Fear of the unknown - Xenophobia
  • Fear of making decisions - Decidophobia
  • Fear of failure - Atychiphobia
  • Fear of falling - Basiphobia
  • Fear of change - Metathesiophobia
  • Fear of small spaces - Claustrophobia
  • Fear of heights - Acrophobia
  • Fear of darkness - Nyctophobia
Does any of these fears apply to you? According to research, 99% of the fears are non-physical - It’s just a state of mind! No one is born with fears but they tend to develop in our heads as we get older. Our brains somehow formulated a perception that there is an imminent danger then we shift into ‘fight’ or ‘flight’ mode.

The great news is that fears can be unlearned and there are techniques that we can do to help us overcome and conquer our fears!

Think positive thoughts

Negative energies are draining so we need to integrate more positivity in our lives and thought process. Whenever you have the urge to think about your fears, fight that feeling and focus more on what makes you feel good.

Do breathing exercises

When you feel the fear is starting to creep in, do this for 1 minute - stop what you’re doing, take 10 slow, deep belly breaths. Inhale slowly and exhale even more slowly. Repeat the steps until you feel calmer.

Learn and apply The Law Of Reversibility

Applying the mental principle called The Law Of Reversibility. “If you think or feel a certain way, you will act in a manner consistent with them.” This principle is reversible. Action and thoughts/feelings go together so we need to regulate our actions and develop the will to overcome our fears.

Be Active

There are a lot of things you can do to get your endorphins flowing - you can go for a walk, dance, swim or ride your bike! These activities can help you clear your mind and boost your energy.

Confront your fears

We can never run away from fear. The best way to deal with it is to not avoid it, but acknowledge that it exists. It can be pervasive but we have to take the risk and see what happens.

“Each of us must confront our own fears, must come face to face with them. How we handle our fears will determine where we go with the rest of our lives. To experience adventure or to be limited by the fear of it.” -Judy Blume

Get Help

You need someone that can be your rock that can help get you through tough times especially when fears become too overwhelming.

Fear is a terrible emotion that’s constantly paralysing us in our daily lives. Let’s stop being reactive to these vulnerable and destructive thoughts and start living life to the fullest.

“Fear is only as deep as the mind allows.” ~ Japanese Proverb

Goal Setting is an important part of success. Do you have a vision of what you want to accomplish? If you look at the CEO's and creators of this world, they all have an end goal of what they want to accomplish. Amongst that end goal, they most likely had smaller short-term goals that led them to their success towards their final goal. Even then, they will continue to create more and more goals to help themselves achieve what they want in life.

Goals can help keep you on track and establish what you want to do in life in order to achieve the final goal. The final goal could be to "learn how to swim freestyle". The question now, is how? This is when you will establish smaller goals of how you are going to achieve the goal of learning how to swim. Smaller goals could be to "Go to the pool twice a week" or "Get private swimming instructor lessons". Creating a time or date of when you want to achieve that particular goal will also help you stay on track. Be specific.

What is something that you are wanting to achieve? Having short term, medium term and long term goals can help you focus on the thing you want most to improve or to achieve. It could be anything from health, your career, your education or family goals.

Just make sure when you are setting goals, keep them realistic. Ensure that you are able to achieve them your set time frame. Also, do not have too many goals because that can stir you from the main goals you are wanting to achieve.

To put it in steps:
  • What is your vision/dream/end goal?
  • What is it you want to achieve?
  • Write them both down.
  • How are you going to achieve that? Write down your short term and medium term goals that relate to what you want to achieve plus your vision.
  • Choose to share them with someone in relation to what you want to achieve. This will help keep you motivated.
  • Go over your goals often in order to help keep you on track and accountable.
  • Make it happen!
Here’s an example:
  • Vision/Dream/End Goal: "I want to finish writing my book"
  • How? "I will write for 3 hours every week"
  • Complete goal
  • Review goals as a reminder
  • Complete goal
  • Now that you know the steps on how to create goals, get goal setting and make your dreams happen!

Major restructuring within a company is required when there are market shifts, new technologies, and intensified competition. This is crucial for business growth and to maintain the company’s global competitiveness.

Although future developments may sound very positive, transformation and restructuring plans could also have negative effects on the workers. Managers who are in charge of business development always think of strategic ways to drive productivity and improve quality levels but at the same time cut costs, however, this often results in destructive layoffs.

Some examples of companies that would have job cuts throughout the year are Australia’s big 4 banks and the retrenchment rate is 12%. There are also global companies in the Automotive, Telecommunications, Information Technology and Internet industries that will undergo massive workforce reduction.

The future is uncertain. Retrenchments happen and they can be heartbreaking. If you feel that there’s an axe hovering above your head, you need to be prepared to land on your feet. Some of the things that you can do are to update your resume, dust off your interview skills, start assessing your cash situation or try to find out how to receive unemployment compensation.

Linkedin is one of the tools that can help you in your networking efforts. It’s a great way to connect with other professionals in the same background. You can also try to seek help from some recruitment agencies.

Share Your Story

Do not be afraid to tell the people you trust about your layoff experience. Layoffs can be very tough. sharing your story could somehow empower you and help you get ready to face the new challenges that may come your way.

Learn Something New

Upskill is to teach someone additional skills.

The Up-skilling process enhances a worker’s abilities within the same job profile and therefore significantly amplifies the worker’s value within the company.

Reskill is to improve the collective skill set of workers.

The re-skilling process involves learning new technology or re-training in the skills needed by a particular company and be able to utilise these skills into an entirely different role within that company.

There are so many technological advancements and other changes in the modern world we live in that’s why companies continuously develop various strategies in reskilling and upskilling to find the talent they need and contribute socially responsible practices to the future of work.

As a part of the workforce, it’s also your duty to embrace these changes. You should constantly refresh the knowledge and skills that you already have so you don’t fall short when the need arises to use them. Taking necessary action could help you deal with the increasingly complex life and work environments.

Upskilling and reskilling are two entirely different approaches but both are absolutely beneficial and can help define your career path no matter what career aspirations you might have. Both can be achieved by getting a professional qualification. Nationally recognised and accredited training is definitely highly valued and can be extremely rewarding on so many levels.

Sleep is a very important factor in our daily lives. Lack of sleep can take a toll on well-being and a lot of things can go wrong when you don’t get good sleep! Chronic sleep deprivation can drastically affect your performance because it impacts your brain's ability to function.

Lack of sleep may cause:

Parts of your brain can slow down

Brain function could be impaired and this negatively affects cognition, concentration, productivity and performance due to reduced blood flow to areas of the brain that control higher level thought process. A study found that the effect is similar to alcohol intoxication. Everything around you would seem to be in slow motion.

Poor athletic performance and recovery

Athletes undergo intense physical activity and multiple mechanisms of action. Tired athletes show weak coordination, low levels of energy and this could lead to a greater risk for injury.

Dangerous Accidents while driving

Drowsy driving is very dangerous and is known to be the major cause of road fatalities. Test how tired you are before you get behind the wheel!

Serious health problems

Less sleep can make your immune system weak and also prone to serious medical conditions, such as obesity, heart disease, and stroke. It can also cause the release of insulin, which leads to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes.

Mental health issues

Poor sleeping habits are strongly linked to mental health problems. It may cause or worsen anxiety, depression, paranoia, and hallucinations.

How much sleep do we need?

Every individual has different sleep requirements and varies with age, however, it’s also highly recommended to follow the sleep duration guide:

  • Above 65 years: 7–8 hours
  • 18–64 years: 7–9 hours
  • 4–17 years: 8–10 hours
  • 6–13 years: 9–11 hours
  • 3–5 years: 10–13 hours
  • 1–2 years: 11–14 hours
  • 4–11 months: 12–15 hours
  • 0–3 months: 14–17 hours

You will feel a million times better when you get enough sleep so if your goal is to have a healthier and more active life, it’s now time to pay serious attention to the improvement of your sleeping habits.

"Sleep is that golden chain that ties health and our bodies together." -Thomas Dekker

b2ap3_thumbnail_Known-Traits-Found-in-Successful-Business-Leaders.png

1. Drive, Motivation and Focus

All leaders have goals and challenges that they want to achieve. When you have a goal, you feel driven and motivated to complete it. They all reach of an end goal but it doesn’t stop there. Once they have completed one goal, they will write another one, whether it is to improve themselves or improve a business goal, goal setting is a cycle for them. All these things will also allow you to push your own limits. Set goals that you know you can accomplish but still also reach for the stars.

2. Patience and Persistence

Not everything will come straight away. Patience is key for a lot of different aspects of life. Working towards something may not provide immediate results. Be patient and persist and everything will eventually come into fruition.

3. Passion

Are you doing what you love? A lot of successful people are in the position they are in because they followed what they love to do and made it a reality. Passion is also what will drive you to want to become successful. You are also more likely to have more fun when you’re doing what you’re passionate about.

4. Communication

A lot of successful people create a network of people around themselves and with this, calls for great communication to get your vision heard and successfully communicated to others to ensure that you are all on the right page with expressing ideas.

5. Self-Confident but also Self Aware

You need to know, trust and believe in yourself in order to make decisions and stick by them and believe it is the best decision for you. With self-confidence comes optimism and belief in your skills and your ideas.

6. Read

Self-knowledge and improvement is important. You have to be open to everything and expand your thoughts to expand your mind to become the best person you want to be. Reading anything and everything will help broaden your horizons and enable you to learn from other people.

7. Waking up early

It is said that those who wake up early are more likely successful people. They start the day early so there is more time to the day and able to fit in exercise to clear their mind before the day starts. Some leaders start their day to increase their productivity. Check out 12 highly influential peoples morning routines here.

Try waking up early in the morning and see if it makes a difference for you!

8. Constant Ideas

Do you always tend to come up with ideas? Write them down. Successful people always come up with ideas that randomly pop up in their head and write them down. Your ideas could help change peoples lives. Creativity is integral in all aspects of business. Without ideas, we wouldn’t have the iphone or computer systems. Innovation comes from ideas so start writing yours down!

9. Listen

Listening is an important skill when it comes to being successful. In order to become a successful and collaborative leader, it is a good skill to listen to those around you and take in what people say but it is important to take it from an objective point of view and not a personal view.

10.  Adaptable - Able to adjust for change and make change

Businesses, environments and the world in which we live in changes everyday. You must be willing to change, improve yourself, your business and set trends. Be innovative, creative and efficient.

11. Willing to fail

Are you confused at what nationally accredited/recognised and professional courses are?
We break it down for you right here.

According to the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA):

"A VET accredited course has been assessed by ASQA as a compliant with the Standards for VET Accredited Courses 2012 and the Australian Qualifications Framework AQF)"

Accreditation is formal confirmation that the course:

  • is nationally recognised
  • meets an established industry, enterprise, educational, legislative or community need
  • provides appropriate competency outcomes and a satisfactory basis for assessment
  • meets national quality assurance requirements
  • is aligned appropriately to the AQF where it leads to a qualification.

This means that the courses that are offered and prescribed at a standard set by ASQA and must keep to that standard to be a complaint RTO. If an RTO is non-compliant, then that RTO is at risk of ASQA’s penalties

If a course is nationally recognised, look for this symbol on our website or on other websites where they offer nationally recognised courses.

What is a Professional Course?

b2ap3_thumbnail_Ways-to-get-creative1.png

Getting creative is a great way to distress and calm your mind. Creativity is also linked to positive mental health benefits as well as increasing your brain flexibility and also increase creative thinking. It’s great even if you don’t think you are creative. It doesn’t have to be drawing. Try out some of the activities below and feel the benefits.

Drawing
Doodling is said to express how you feel. The great thing about doodling is that you can be free with what you doodle. Try doodling at work or while studying if you feel stuck on something or you just feel blocked.

Painting
Grab your favourite colours and start painting with acrylics, oil paints, watercolours, whatever suits your mood and expression at the time.

Writing
Need to let go of some anger or just want to tell someone and log about your day? Write your way through it. Writing is a great release of thoughts. Don’t bottle it up, write to release.

Music
Try listening to a different genre of music and see how it makes you feel. Maybe even create some music. Pick up an instrument or compose some beats on your laptop using a free program.

Cooking
Don’t know what to cook tonight? Good. Grab whatever is in your fridge already and cook something from those ingredients. It could be something amazing or something that is somewhat edible. Let’s stay positive here. You could create a breakthrough dish.

Dancing
What more can I say.  Dance the night away in your own style. Just go at it with all the energy and enthusiasm you’ve got. Dance like no one is watching. You’ll feel better for it.

Read
Reading opens up your mind to new and interesting things and also helps create your own ideas. It’s also one of the best ways to get inspired and excited about the world the writer has created. When you are exposed to different worlds and ideas, you are able to formulate your own creative opinions on different topics that you have read. How is that for your next dinner conversation?

Learning is a process that never ends. It’s a part of our daily routine. All throughout our lives we are continuously learning and developing to be the best version of ourselves. We apply the knowledge and skills we acquire in different ways ultimately for the purpose of one thing - to achieve success.

The Relationship Between Learning & Employment

“The More You Know, the More You Can Grow” - Martin Hilbert

Being competent and specialising in only one skill can give you a high chance of getting employed, however, having the ability to move between various skill sets could definitely move you up the ladder. A wider range of skills definitely pays off in the long run.

The Learning Curve in a Nutshell

Learning Curve is a graphical representation of progress in learning. In the business world, one’s learning curve should be “steep”. This means challenging skills that take a while to learn should be mastered in a short period of time. Improving your Skill Sets profile can make you more likely stand out and make a positive and lasting impression to employers.

Understanding Skill Sets

Have you identified the type of training that you need in order to become more competitive? If you are after industry-specific knowledge, there are a lot of available options to explore and one of them is Skill Sets Training. It’s a simple and cost-effective way in fulfilling industry needs and considered as a stepping stone to further study and work opportunities.

Skills Sets are single or combinations of units of competency from a nationally endorsed training package and are delivered in the form of short courses. Once you finish the course, you will acquire a ‘statement of attainment’.

It’s important to understand that Skill Sets are not qualifications. They are not designed to replace qualifications but they can be considered as an alternative to qualifications in such a way that may help a worker to create a pathway to a nationally recognised qualification. In other words, you have the option to put the skill sets together to complete a full qualification later.

Take a look at the Skills Sets available on our website:

  • Accounting & Finance Faculty
    • Accounts Administration with MYOB Skill Set SOAMYOB
    • FNSSS00004 BAS Agent Registration Skill Set
  • Tourism & Travel
    • SITSS00059 Airfare Construction Skill Set
    • Use a Computerised Reservations or Operations System Skill Set SITCRS
    • Airfares & Ticketing I & II Skill Set SITFT

Guiding children with different levels of development and backgrounds can be challenging because there are a lot of factors to keep in mind when working in the education sector. To be able to foster children’s learning and development in the best possible way is not only a profession but a noble service and can be incredibly rewarding especially when you see the positive impact of your work and the difference you make in the lives of young people.

Childhood educators have the responsibility and commitment to help children be equipped with skills and tools to build a solid foundation for learning and succeed as they get older while creating meaningful relationships with these children in a diverse community setting at the same time.

Being able to establish the ability to effectively work and communicate is crucial and should be done in a way that is respectful and positive. Assistance is also needed in the midst of encountering difficulties such as barriers to learning to those with disabilities and special needs. Ensuring the health, safety, and welfare is important to have a more conducive learning space that allows you and your team to effectively perform tasks knowing that they are in a risk-free environment.

Take part in the development of young minds! The CHC30113 Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care course is the entry-level course that allows you to work in a childcare centre, as well as having other opportunities such as a becoming a qualified Nanny, working at a family day care and outside school care.

If you aim to have a role that allows you to supervise and develop the curriculum of an early childhood education and care service, the CHC50113 Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care course can teach you the necessary skills to do that.

If you are interested in working with older children, we also offer CHC30213 Certificate III in Education Support.

“Expecting all children the same age to learn from the same materials is like expecting all children the same age to wear the same size clothing.” -Madeline Hunter

“To assist a child we must provide him with an environment which will enable him to develop freely.” -Maria Montessori

Get a glimpse of what it’s like to be an Interior Designer and Decorator in the real world! There isn’t actually a ‘typical’ day because projects are unique and handled in different ways, however, there are also noticeable patterns that commonly occur on a daily basis.

We have gathered information from different sources and here is a list of the activities that are usually done per project:

  • Design Brief
The brief is basically the written summary of all the requirements and specifications of the project. This must be defined based on the client’s style preference. The information gathered from the face-to-face meeting with the client would also determine the budget and the time it will take to do the project.
  • Research
Get ideas from existing designs, current trends and suitable materials that can be used for the project.
  • Collaboration
When you work in a team environment, collaboration is always an important process. Working as a team enables everyone to pitch in their creative ideas to help each other provide the best result to clients. Weekly staff meetings are needed to get updates regarding ongoing projects.
  • Design mock-up
This is an important step for the client to understand and visualise the outcome of the project. Design mock-ups could be in the form of 2D or 3D graphics or it can also be shown through traditional perspective sketches/drawings or floor plans.
  • Client Presentation
This is the time when the boards, mock-ups or drawings are shown to the client in order to get some feedback. Once everything is approved and signed off, the project will move to the development stage.
  • Execution
This is the phase when construction begins and see ideas come to life! Regular site visits should be done in order to liaise with architects, engineers, contractors, manufacturers, suppliers, and clients. Tasks and deliverables are closely monitored to make sure the site is in compliance and the whole project is on track.
  • Completion
When the final set-up is done, a walk-through is needed to see if there are small issues that may need attention.
Aside from that, there are also a lot of things happening in between especially when designers are handling a number of projects at the same time and each project has various stages that need to be monitored a few times a week. Time is also spent on admin work such as making phone calls, answering emails and organising appointments.

Working in this industry is definitely fun and rewarding so if you are interested in becoming an Interior Designer and Decorator, gain the skills that you need to get started. New technologies are now reshaping the Accounting & Finance sector. Let’s take a look at some of the trends that are important to know especially if you are pursuing a career in that industry.

Customer Service Optimisation

The relationship between organisations and their customers are now ever-present and open-ended. More agile methodologies are being introduced, and as a result, the pace of change is faster than ever. There will be customer journey mapping and the data gathered will be used to provide insight. This starts with asking questions like what the customers are thinking and feeling. Digital innovation is implemented together with physical organisational changes and is facilitated by enablers of the business in order to be sustainable and to deliver seamless and more effective customer service.

Automation and Cognification

More organisations and businesses will now be using artificial intelligence fuelled by software advancement to service their clients. This technology minimises or eliminates the need of high-volume manual data entry and other redundant tasks therefore, decreases financial risk, saves a lot of time and lowers production costs making it easier for business owners to expand to new locations.

Cyber Security Awareness

Due to an increase in privacy and security breaches all over the world, cyber attacks were found to be the biggest concern in 2018. Data is considered to be a valuable financial asset and therefore organisations should increase awareness and make data protection a number one priority to prevent financial losses and damage to reputation.

The Rise of Millennials

There will be an increase in Millennial tax-payers in 2018 and they expect to get strategic insight and more customised service from their accountants. These younger generation entrepreneurs have a significant share in the SME sector and are more focused on growth and digital platforms. Their working habits are entirely different from their predecessors. They crave for freedom and flexibility so they prefer to use online portals that simplify workflows and enhances productivity. To be able to help them succeed in their business, accountants need to diversify services and use the proper technology to gain competitive advantage.

Customer Support can be a very rewarding profession with a wide range of career options. There are a lot of leadership opportunities to explore. You can move up the corporate ladder from being an entry-level customer support professional to becoming a team leader and eventually manager of the support team. You can even work towards securing a directorship.

If a people leadership role is not your cup of tea, then consider domain leadership. You can still achieve career growth without managing people by means of becoming a subject-matter expert or specialist (SME) and play a vital role in other areas of the business. This is, in fact, a very practical way to move up a notch. Horizontal growth is also a great option. There’s a possibility to advance into other roles such as development, sales, QA and many others.

To establish a career path in Customer Support, the Certificate II in Customer Engagement will serve as your stepping stone then the Certificate III in Customer Engagement can help you develop the ability to handle a range of complex customer service scenarios and be qualified to apply for higher industry roles.

customer-support-March2018.png

A lot of companies and organisations are already innovating and embracing agile methods of working so it’s very important to always learn and develop new skills, processes and also a positive attitude that will see challenges and issues not as roadblocks but as an opportunity to improve.

Start designing your Customer Support career roadmap. What do you see yourself doing? What is your ideal working environment? Determine what you really want to pursue and which direction you want to grow in by listing down all the things that interest you and you will soon get there.
